    Market Tax

I've been running the market for so long but i noticed that much, much gil from what i sell is given to taxes. My questions are:

    1) If i put something to sell in Ul'dah market, is it visible by someone who checks the market from LL?
    2) Is there a fixed tax for each market, if yes, how much?
    3) Tax rate affects amount of things for selling? I constantly keep my retainers full in terms of selling capacity but if this is the case i might not gain any profit at all.
    4) Why is there a tax after all?

    Thanks in advance

    1) Yes. If you check the market board you can actually see where each item is from
    2) I can't remember the amount, but I know there is an NPC you can see the current tax rates for. usually one is less than the others.
    3) Nothing like that. Basically you're charged a tax for purchasing from a different market than where you are. There's also a fee they take from your profits that you can see before you list the item.
    4) To help deflate the economies, to put it simply. It's one of a few ways they pull extra gil out of the system since the game throws so much at you in general.

Everyone can basically view every single item listed in all 4 city states regardless of where they are.

    2) Is there a fixed tax for each market, if yes, how much?
Should be 5% iirc if you purchase something that isn't currently listed at where you're getting the item. Lets say you're in LL and buy something that's being sold from U'ldah/Gridania/Ishgard, you will get taxed whereas you will not if you get something that's from LL. On some occasions, the tax will be reduced to 2%, usually during seasonal/special events.

    3) Tax rate affects amount of things for selling? I constantly keep my retainers full in terms of selling capacity but if this is the case i might not gain any profit at all.
The tax doesn't affect anything but you earning less. Something like you earn 95% of the price you set and buyer had to pay 100% of the price set (more than 100% if they're buying from different state)

    4) Why is there a tax after all?
So Godbert can have enough to build a bigger gold statue of him at the Gold Saucer It's for "gold sink" purposes. More can be read here.

Check the rates with the Hire retainer npc. Reduced areas state how long the discount will last when clicking on them.

    Current tax rates are:
    Limsa Normal 5%
    Gridania Normal 5%
    Ul'dah Reduced 3%
    Ishguard Reduced 3%

Depends on what's tax paid by the buyer vs tax paid by the seller.

Buyer pays tax when buying from a marketboard not in their current physical location.

Seller pays tax on anything they sell based on the retainer's selling location. The game rotates reduced seller tax rates between the territories regularly such as in the quoted example of differing tax rates.

Even some have answered your questions directly but I still want to tell you why you should have knew the answers if you really "running the market for so long"...

    1) If i put something to sell in Ul'dah market, is it visible by someone who checks the market from LL?
This is an odd question! When you check the MB, each listing item comes with the selling retainer name and the registerted city!
Obviously you can see item selling from different cities just by detemining the GC icon after each retainer name, so it is visible.

    2) Is there a fixed tax for each market, if yes, how much?
If you are buying something, a confimation box will popup, and it will say you need to pay 5% buyer tax if you are buying from a retainer not at your current location(city).
if you are selling something, while you input price and quantity, it also displays the net total you will receive after tax deduction.
In addition, the seller tax is 5%, but sometimes there will be special offer like 3% or even 0% for the city not popular in order to attract more ppl list item at there.

    3) Tax rate affects amount of things for selling? I constantly keep my retainers full in terms of selling capacity but if this is the case i might not gain any profit at all.
Tax rate affects the GIL you recieved, in general every item you sold will have TAX deducted automatically.
If you sold nothing, then you no need to pay any tax regarding how many item you have listed, with that said listing item for sell is free.

    4) Why is there a tax after all?
    Actually there is a very simple reason has not been mentioned, it prevents players using the MB to do item(expansive) transfer with their ALT, or wipe all selling history by what they want with no cost. ^^;
As if no tax is required, everyone will put their item on MB and buy it back from the MB. All selling history will become meaningless and ruin the market.
Moreover, players can store their item on the MB, and buy the item from their own retainers regardless of how much price as the gil will return to the players completely.
