What gets me is the whole time we've been in Ishgard the Garleans are just sitting on their hands leaving the world alone?

I remember seeing a few cut scenes introducing the menacing Emperor with the casket of Van Baelsar but haven't heard a peep from that front in a while.

We don't know much time had passed since the fall of the Castrum in 2.0, but I bet they wanted to regather and double up their efforts, which would take time. There was also the issue of the old emperor passing away in 2.3 or 2.4, so they needed to appoint someone else in his place. By 3.0, it seemed they were doing mostly scouting missions, looking for Azys Lla.

ermmm i'm not sure if i have seen the same story than you.... the arc of the warrior of the darkness is quite a symbolic actually, i did explain it in another thread, but let's redo it.

the warrior of darkness are said to come from the 1st parallele dimension that did begin to fade into the light. the story about the dimension was explained a long time ago, about how they did split the world in 13 world because of zordiark... and how we live on the original world. each cataclysm often lead to a dimension to fuse back with our world (strangely it when new technology and even civilization appear or disappear) soo far 7 world did fuse back. 1 did fall into darkness and another one did fall into the light (the warrior of darkness world) means we have only a few world left that one day we will either have to visit or face cataclysm for fuse them back.

anyway, the warrior of darkness are actually the heroes of the V1, check the different video of FF14 V1 for see this. FF14 V1 is seen as the darkest chapter of the final fantasy series.... do you begin to see the link? they are the soul of the heroes that was the one showed to us for the game... this part is litterally a passing the hand to us, making us one more time the center of the story, not this group anymore. for new player i can understand that it have not a lot of weight, but for us player of the V1 it can have a loot of symbolism.

even the attack they use are the one showed in the trailer of the v1, when the lala was cast a spell for enhance the arrow of the archer miqote. everything is about this.... yeah it can feel weak for you, but for me it was really strong and intense. it was like a way to say, we are finally leaving FF14 V1.... we are finally beginning to explore the world to finally write the true story of FF14 where we are the heroes. until now it was only story and part we was waiting, expecting, while having a few bit of information about....from new is really a new world a new story. yeah we can argue that we did heard of ala miggho, but we have never seen anything from it....

ishgard was seen in the V1.... this part was really impressive and i'm kinda happy they have done it. Minfillia too was part of the V1 and leaving us is hard... it's like a friend we let go for never see again.... i hope one day they will come back... but from now. gosh.... i'm soo much excited to see where it gonna lead.

about the empire, we do have tons of information, the emperor goal, what is happenning in them rank actually, even a glimspe of them new technologie. i'm kinda excited and scared to see where it will lead us.

for the one that need some detail here is the stuff we know:
the garlmand can't use magic, it will kill them to us it they are unable to use it because of the biology of them body, it's why they did put all them effort into technology that use magic. the previous emperor did invade the whole continent of the empire (who is far bigger than eorzea) in less of 1 generation and we know that per 2 time them invasion was repelled by... exterior disturbance (midgarsorm and him dragon, dalamud with the bahamut surprise inside them) after the war the emperor did die and for a long time they did fight over who will be the next emperor.

and now the new emperor is there, he did come personally in eorzea with him flagship and a legion for exterminate the threat the primordial pose. because you can be sure that they did learn from allag error. while ignoring a large part of them mistake about the use of this being. for him the best way is to exterminate the beastman that can summon this sort of threat. is not an invasion.... it's a purge!

now the last information we did receive, ala miggho have a new governor quite hard, the resistance is planning a large assault for retake them land... but honestly, do you really think the emperor of the biggest empire of the world will have come here with 1 legion and 1 flagship for this purge? why we don't heard anything.... because the war is coming and this time, we can't expect the exterior disturbance that did save us.... we will have to fight to the bitter end. and it will start with ala miggho.

Thank you for the explanations, Silentwindfr! That was a very interesting read ^^
I also thought that the story with the Warriors of Darkness was related to the old FFXIV, and I found that detail really awesome. Also excited to see where this is going, and I love the more personal interaction the WoL is finally having with the rest of characters.

What confuses people is that people like to say light = good and darkness = evil. This isn't true for all final fantasy series.

On FF light and darkness are elementals just like water, fire, wind and earth (and captain planet), if we were to put it in a easier way to understand imagine light = life and darkness = death.

Too much life without death is bad and too much death without life is also bad, that's why the void is what it is, it's a world of nothing but death with it's beings deformed by the darkness, while the world the WoD came from is a void of light.

I feel like Nidhogg's arc and the Warrior of Darkness arc were both rushed but that's just me.
Got that feeling more so with the W/Darkness. Maybe a bit more background would have helped, and a more developed story & finale.
Other pieces of the story also seemed a bit rushed.
Finding Yda & Papalymo was - hey who's that? - Oh hi how's things?
These are close allies they lost in dire circumstances, who could well have been killed.

Maybe the parallel worlds stuff came across better for people who played previous FF games.
Hopefully it explained how the W/Darkness could go around killing off people/beast tribes and then just walk off with Lightfilia or whoever she is now.
As for the Crystal bit, "Welcome my children" - "Oh by the way, I'm on the point of annihilating your planet Darkness guys".

If the problem is parallel worlds and Warriors of Darkness, well, all I can say is "welcome to Final Fantasy". But if the problem is HOW they progressed with the story, yeah, I agree it's rushed and seems out of place, but let's wait for 3.5, because the current patch was just a link between the end of the Dragonsong War and what's coming next.

oh, we're going to get a lot from the Imperials soon.

In real life, you need to worry the most when a warring nation reminds quiet and in the shadows. That is far more sinister than a warring nation picking fights.

A patient enemy is often the most powerful enemy. And they have been very patient.

Dude I stopped paying attention to the story at the start of the seventh astral era line when I looked up how many other quests I had to do to get to the end.
I just want to unlock game content at this point. I couldn't care less about why I, the hero of Eorzea, am fighting dragons for tea leaves or moving logs for some lazy npc.
It loses all of it's logic once you have to play the game anyway.

    SKIP ALL THE CUTSCENES! AHHAAHAHAHA

If that's true then the physical separation of the two between realms just creates a literal binary of good vs evil. I don't blame people for getting confused because FF didn't set it up as a yin yang system, only an eternal struggle for dominance between the two factions.
