The Warriors of Darkness and New Job Conspiracy Theory (Spoilers Ahead)

During the new 3.4 storyline, we finally get more acquainted with the Warriors of Darkness. One thing I noticed was that
J'rhoomale is referred to both by dialogue and NPCs as the Ranger of Darkness.

At first it was strange to me that she'd be referred to as a Ranger as opposed to something Bard related (Ministrel, Poet, etc), especially since all other Warriors of Darkness are referred to with titles that directly correspond to their job (Knight is the JP name for Paladin, Devout and Magus are direct upgrades from White and Black Mage mage, and Arbert is flat out referred to as a Warrior). During the
instanced fight with the Warriors of Darkness, J'rhoomale doesn't use any songs or song-related abilities outside of The Wanderer's Minuet (and this isn't as much a 'song' as it is a necessity to attack properly as a Bard)

But this got me thinking...what if all this was intentional?
I could be making this up, but I remember reading somewhere that this year's Moonfire Faire had a small hint about an upcoming job. And what could be more overt than the fact that we are assisting the Posing Rangers (though I'll concede that this isn't exactly meant to be taken as the Bow-wielding Ranger).

Could this be a sign that Ranger is a potential new job? What would this mean for Bards? Someone pass the tinfoil hat!

I like the idea of a Ranger class. My friends and I have talked about that before, it'd be kindof easy to do. I know they said they dont want to do a split job path like they did with Arcanist ever again, but this would honestly be perfect. At 30 an archer can become either a Ranger(dps focus) or a Bard (support focus).

Bard could keep Wanderers Minuet in order to do dps damage, while Ranger could keep the mobility that Archer has for 50 levels. They might need to shuffle around Bard's skills a bit, move some of them over to ranger and add some more songs/support skills, but honestly this could work.

    And it could be good.

I thought it was more to do with the fact they came from another world and things like White Mages, Black Mages etc might not exist there rather than showing off new jobs or job upgrades and those names we see are that world's version of the jobs we have. The gear as a re-colour was just being lazy with the design time but that's nothing new in this game.

It wasn't a hint for a new job, if they're a hint they're a hint for advanced jobs. The best example was the WHM since she was a devout, a known job advancement after white mage. Can't remember if the black mage was also a magus either, need to recheck the cutscene.

The only thing that makes me think that was nothing more than a name is our current skillset. Holy is a devout skill, not a whm skill.

    edit:

    yep, confirmed

Tbh I definitely think you're right with this. She was never intended to be a 'Bard' but they couldn't be bothered creating different gear, so just picked the closest thing they could find that would allow her to use a bow and arrow. One of my reasoning against the idea that Bard/White Mage / Paladin etc didn't exist in their world was that she was using Artemis Bow, a weapon specifically designed for a Bard (The original Godsbow iirc) which wouldn't have existed in a world where Bards didn't exist. But now I think about it, I think you're definitely right that this was just developer laziness lol

arent the WoD job names(Ranger-Knight-Magus-Devout) just more references to Final Fantasy III along with the whole flooding light destroying the world?. Cloud of Darkness,Xande and Crystal Tower are all references from FFIII as well so it makes sense they'd refer back to it again.

I agree, they're techniques weren't too different from our own that they'd be a different class in my opinion. Alissae's Spellblade-like ability, however seems to me more of a hint of the Spellblade job being possible, which would be refreshing in my opinion; a melee magic class. ^_^

Nobody posting here has made any attempt to suggest otherwise, the entire thread is just supposed to be fun theorizing. If you're going to post a reply please ensure it contributes to the subject of the thread, otherwise it's entirely redundant.

You know, I completely forgot about this but you're right. The Warriors of Darkness and their background echoes the events of Final Fantasy III, so it makes sense that they'd refer to them with job titles taken from FFIII.

I agree that Alisaie's abilities that were showcased are definitely the strongest hint towards what to expect from a new job in future! There's a few traditional FF jobs that fit her fighting style (Red Mage, Spellblade, Mystic Knight) or perhaps it may be something entirely unique to XIV. I'm excited to find out more!
