Keith Dragoon - Ambassador of Artz and Adorable
Personaly I love surnames as they are
In the end I went with TheVedis Foxbat
At first I wanterd to just be "The Vedis" but that woulda sounded a bit odd as an actual name....so I condensed Thevedis into 1 name(sure its meant to be read as seperate words, but could also be read as a single word too) and went with Foxbat as a last name, as a tribute to the greatest supervillian of all time!
as far as abuse in names go, you can have 1, 2 even 10 word names, and people willk be dumb about them so thats never an excuse for why you shouldnt have it one way or the other(and coming from the op who has ROFL as his name, thats just hilarious to hear, but you cant expect anything less from that guy)

The best middle ground is for SE to make Surnames optional.

I really like the surnames. It adds more depth to naming your character and it helps to reduce people having too similar of names like 100 people with a variation of Cloudstrife or Sephiroth now its easily distinguishable by their surname (or first name sometimes in this setup). I mean it is still possible to have similar names, but there is a greatly decreased chance even if you see people with the goal of attempting to copy player names.
I agree that surnames should be an option.
You can target the person you wanna send /tell to her/him then type:
/tell <t> Hello
<t> <<< this will show her/his name without needing to type it by yourself.

Since they're already in the game, they shouldn't take them off
If they were optional, it would look kinda weird seeing a player with one name and another player with a first and last name
