I don't know if this has been said before but maybe adding another setting to controller targeting. I feel like when you press X (or A if you're using a Xbox controller) that it should target the object in the middle of the screen. Think of it like how a lot of third-person shooters have a null crosshair when you don't have a weapon out. Some games even depict it as an unobtrusive dot in the middle of the screen so you can essentially move the camera around and still target things fairly accurately. I just think the targeting needs to be reworked because there are times where I would be facing a target that I intend to select and have the the game target something else entirely. You can probably get the game to move the mouse cursor to the middle of the screen and hide it the moment you move the camera.

I'd vote no on this one, because right now, that's the only way we have to target the nearest mob in front of us, which is rather important for melee characters.

The only improvement I'd like to see in that part is in the precedence of different object types. Right now, NPCs have priority over everything else, then mobs, then items, then players. The only part they got right about that is players. (Their being last ensures we can target quest givers, summoning bells, etc. even when there's a crowd surrounding it.)

The place NPCs and mobs tend to appear together is in FATEs, where melee characters are going to be focused on fighting the mobs, and it's annoying having the selection always favor any NPC in the area over the mob right in front of us. And gathering nodes are only visible/selectable when on a gathering class, yet the system will target even mobs behind us in favor of the node we're facing. That's annoying, as whenever we're able to even see a gathering node, then we're not interested in targeting mobs. The order should be:
items (or at least gathering nodes) -> mobs -> NPCs -> players
