i know diddlysquat about native american culture so i can't answer that. i just can understand why they'd be upset concerning the warbonnet, at least, as some of them don't mention the highlander's outfit at all.
i personally don't think the warbonnet is so amazing that it absolutely must stay in the game and wouldn't mind if it's removed or modified, especially if someone is bothered by it. i just want the ponchos. the ponchos are all i care about. i need them.

I think what many people mean is that, perhaps, the offended players could be as open minded as those from other cultures and religious views which have appeared in-game. Instead, it feels like they are acting as if their culture was the most exclusive and untouchable, the only one that deserves "respect". And the thing is that there's no disrespect here. It's just an ingame costume, and people will wear it as such. Doing homage to any culture is not supposed to be an insult, and pretending that your own culture is above every other (and that it should be above every other for the rest of the world as well) is a bit unreasonable.

(And just for the record, I wasn't planning to wear those items because I'm not really interested, but now I'm scared on top of that ;; )

Now this isn't a troll question and I'm genuinely curious - as someone stated the OP isn't Native American. I'm Asian and would only ever think to voice opposition to things that pertain to my own race/ethnicity since these are the only things I have intimate knowledge of. That is, I have felt racism and such because of being Asian and so can speak about it. I am wondering if it is just empathy that makes people not of the 'offended or could be offended' minority group think to speak for these groups, or something else? I honestly wonder what makes people feel they need to speak for others like this? In a way, it often seems to me and my friends that people are making others (the minorities) out to be like submissive weaklings who need the 'majority' to speak up for them, when this just isn't often the case. Often, from my experience, the minorities would rather people not do that.

It's one thing if you're not interested (I'm not really either), but PLEASE don't let the vocal minority ruin something harmless for you.

We are the warriors of light... Eorzea has never seen heroes as heroic as us. So by your own definition that sounds very fitting to me?!

We have literally beaten GODS! (well sort of!)

I can understand what you mean, but frankly war bonnets are not indicative of any tribe, in fact they aren't exclusive to native american culture at all. Exist in Polynesian, South Easter Asian etc etc etc. Am I going to sit here and say it's not inspired by native american imagery? No. But I'm also not going to speak for an entire group of people. There is a large difference between being offended by something and something being insensitive. Can we, as a group, rightly justify the existence of a feathered headdress as any more offensive than a pope hat? Or Arabic clothing? Or a Yukata? Etc etc? No. It's not named for a specific tribe. It doesn't reference a specific tribe.

This isn't the same as a football team being called the redskins. It's just an homage to an cultural style. But what do I know?

I don't think anyone is against it because they think it's the most amazing addition ever or anything, they just dislike the precedent it would consequentially set.

While I can see reasons for people some to be upset by the inclusion of a war bonnet, this is certainly not the first time a design for a video game costume/attire clearly heavily inspired by real world cultures has offended the cultures that inspired the design (a fairly recent example being related to Overwatch, a Hindu group asked Blizzard to specifically remove Symmetra's Devi and/or Goddess outfits as they is clearly based on Hindu Gods).

Whether or not groups of Native Americans will be directly offended is beyond me. The vast majority of people on these forums have little to no knowledge of how the items will be viewed by the cultures that inspired it and are just jumping to conclusions about either side.

If the heavily inspired attire is deemed an overly offensive gesture: it may be removed or changed. However, I think it is unlikely to happen.

My genuinely curious question is this: Would it have been less or more offensive to people if SQUEX chose a cowboy costume for their 'American' costume. Frankly I think it's kind of neat they went the Native American route, but for the record I'm not Native American.

Whao there, I have saved this world so many times, killed so many primals (especially while farming for mounts), what is it if not heroism? I consider myself a damn hero, and actually deserve this war bonnet for free!
