They also let you unlock the quest skills as you go so you don't feel "gimp" and can try out the abilities before you get them in the outside world. ^^Recently came back after an 8 month break, and I find PotD to honestly be one of the best additions they've made to the game. In it you can:
Level an alt class fairly quickly (quicker than waiting in dps queues, I believe).
Make money (by selling Materia V)
Get an easily attainable i235 weapon for numerous jobs depending on how much you want to grind
Forego expert roulettes and cap lore with a few full 1-50 runs while making money/getting a weapon
Solo friendly for many jobs
Get to try out new and sometimes wonky party compositions
All in all, I think it is great and would love to know why you dislike it so much.
Did it for my MNK I have to say my reactions was "I have no idea what any of these buttons do!"
< Worst MNK EU I think xD
A lot of people love it. It's like a modern take on mystery dungeon titles. Sorry it's not your thing.
Personally I love PotD. It's a great way to test and level alts and as a bonus you can get a really nice weapon. If I had to make one suggestion, I'd like to see more of a puzzle element introduced, or even some floors that are themed with the Golden Saucer type games, where you have to get a certain score to move forward.
Last night I saw tank with the 235 weapon(as well as a shield) in a dungeon duty. Now I...I want PotD a little more. _(:3」∠)_

I have the WHM cane. I felt like a raver, I had to glamour it. XD
I want to get the SMN tome soon.
Also, can't forget how PotD makes for an easy alternative to cap tomes.
While I agree that Diadem was a bland failure, I did like that it at least had different objectives (granted you didn't have to do them and they were pretty blah) and I liked the openness of the map.
I hope in the future, they take the openness and exploration Diadem was suppose to have and the randomness and intrigue Palace was suppose to have to make something far more interesting.
This is what I feel when people say PotD is a good place to "try out" new jobs.
I've been in so many parties with newer players who got frustrated or embarrassed because they couldn't figure out their job.
PUGs/MNKs who felt they weren't doing their combos right, ACNs/SMNs who didn't know they were DoT-based jobs, not pet-jobs, and worried they weren't using their pets correctly, SCHs who didn't realize Physick is stronger then Aldo, etc.
I genuinely do not like PotD either.
Yes, it has its uses such as leveling alt jobs, but I am done with leveling everything I want to play. You can get a i235 weapon, but I rather do Nidhogg Ex for one. People seem to focus so much on the reward but I am not so sure they enjoy the content itself, which I think is painfully boring. Its only my opinion, but literally puts me to sleep to be fighting striking dummies for an extended period of time. 50 levels of the same thing. Its repetitive. I said to myself I would finish it at least once, but then apparently I did not have enough aetherpool to progress, so I have to restart. That left a bad taste in my mouth and I have not gone back in since. And then starting over with your basic skills and moving up again, ugh no.
Not my cup of tea. Not a troll response just because I disagree with the popular opinion, I am sorry.

Again.. a poorly designed content and a personal taste are 2 VERY different things..
If you dont like it just dont play it, it does not mean is not good.
I like it. It at least offers a somewhat fresh experience every time you go in, which is more that can be said of nearly every other dungeon in the game.
If you've ever done Nyzul Isle in FFXI, you'd realize that would not be as nice as you're thinking it would be.- Killing monsters is the only thing to do in PotD. Would be nice to have other goals.
Nyzul had one objective that was not just "kill the enemies / kill one certain kind of enemy", the dreaded lamp floors. It was the most notorious sort of objective that has held up countless runs to the point of failure. I don't even want to entertain the thought of them bringing something like that to POTD.
