I think a permanently cheaper sub fee is plenty of a "thank you/apology", having the legacy chocobo is plenty. 1.0 players are the ultimate special snowflakes that want to stay special snowflakes while talking down to any non 1.0 player that wants to keep 2.0+ "limited" things as limited items. It's quite laughable. I fully recognize the 1.0 players deserve something for what they got in the past, but I think it's time to move on and get over it.

To touch on the texture painting thing you were talking about earlier, that I didn't really touch on. Yes you can paint directly on the texture and get a tattoo, the problem arises if you want an A-symmetrical design on a symmetrically UV'd model.

Also if you do it via painting directly on the texture you have to utilize the full RGB channels of that texture. Which is much more expensive when you think about the fact that you would need a new texture for each type, each race and gender of a tattoo that way.. and it would most likely conflict with the skin tones, assuming you wanted different colors. (not sure if they are tinting for the skin tones, or what)

With the mask you can just do black and white (On or off, depending if they want blending with the grey scale or not either way cheaper than a full RGB), with a fill color, that can be tinted anyway you want in a much smaller resolution and tiled. Think 16x16 pixel, probably even smaller vs 1024x1024 full RGB, thats assuming they even need pixels for their fills, and how they tint etc... etc.. I don't know what actual resolution they are using for their diffuse textures, this is just an example. You would still need the mask to be a significant resolution (to avoid stair stepping in the stencil/blend) but it would be cheaper because it isn't utilizing full RGB and instead, using a single channel, also it wouldn't interfere as much with any skin tones they have set up. Additionally, you could have the mask effect only the diffuse if you wanted, or have it bleed into the specular, gloss and normal maps, depending on the effect you are going for. Which may or may not be too many instructions for the shaders etc.. yadda.. yadda

Alternatively you can duplicate the Geo, and float it above the existing mesh and copy weights for animation, with this method you can still use a mask, instead On would be the tattoo showing, and off would be transparency of the mesh (instead of On being the tattoo tint color and Off being the base texture in the previous method). The benifit here is, that you can dupe just the Geo you need for that particular piece and give it a tad more resolution since you are not dealing with the full UV layout of the source. The downside being , having to spawn in the meshes instead of just swapping the mask via override and also having less control over any blending between the base and the tattoo if it was so desired, and also having artists make sure that the floating geo isn't either A. double sided or B. casting shadows on the mesh below it.

Also again, I've heard of some projection type things that may be easier/better allowing for manual placement on the user end of a tattoo and being able to effect scale etc... (think pointing a flashlight at the model or a wall, moving it around and changing the scale by backing up or move closer to it, the light casting on the wall being the tattoo in this example), not sure on cost of something like that, nor how that plays with the uvs, if they are even needed, as I have not really worked with them.

Phew, anyway hope that makes some sense or better sense, starting to get a bit tired. I'm sure there are more methods, those are just the ones that pop into my head right away if I needed to tackle this.

Which is exactly why most of the legacy players here said they were ok with having tattoo for everyone as long as the legacy brand stay 1.0 only..... ^^"(regarding there is also a lore behind it). Most of the players who don't want it are, surprisingly, 2.0 players thinking 1.0 should be treated as special snowflakes when said players don't seem to give a damn about it ^^"

This comes off as very bitter lol. Move on from what? Getting our rewards that they said are a one time thing? I don't understand. You think if a designer releases a one time design/set of clothing (Look up Toxic Vision) that they will just release it again if enough begging/bickering happens? No..she won't. That is called lying...and not a good thing to do to devoted customers. Some people saved up tons of money for a computer back in 1.0 days, and struggled to play to get legacy and just to support the developers.

The time came and passed for legacy..if people missed it, that is too bad. If people wanted different tattoo's, whatever..I don't care. Has nothing to do with being "special" I already am in the sense that I am my own individual IRL...who the heck has a need to be unique in a mmorpg?

It is all about SE keeping their word. Most of the time you can't even see the tattoo anyway...but yeah, that is for people who supported the game when everyone else was bashing and laughing at it. If you wanted it so badly then you should have been there from the start. Everyone had equal opportunity to be there...they posted the info for nearly a year. You snooze you lose.

Heybunny, the tattoo is character-specific, not account-specific. Your old character accomplished something that would get the tattoo. You don't even need to have the legacy bonuses to your account for that, it's entirely on what you did in 1.0.
If I were to make a new character who didn't survive the calamity, there'd be no tattoo.

A lot of people merge the legacy character and legacy account bonuses together, but it's not the same in the end!

Oh ya! This is true...so taking our tattoo would also be messing with the lore. I forgot about this...it had nothing to do with legacy..just as long as your character survived the calamity..LOL. tbh like I mentioned earlier..I did not even know legacy was a thing until it popped up on my account back then when I got it haha

So that being said..Ilitsa you are mocking legacy people and what not..well, that is not even a legacy perk..it is people who survived the meteor lol. So I guess all of us who just played in 1.x days are self entitled jerks o.o
