Skilltrees can be reseted in most of games, some for free, some for ingame currency, nothing is carved in stone.Ugh...I certainly would hate going through the early iterations of such a system again. Playing through classic WoW was fun - you could level with one build only to have it completely irrelevant at endgame because you were just too subpar. Shadow-priests, Ret-Pallies, Ferals, Balance-Druids, Sub-Rogues, Survival Hunters, Arcane Mages...heck, like half the specs were pretty much trap-builds akin to walking around in vit accessories on non-tanks. Some at least had their uses in PvP, not unlike vit accessories. I smell parallels.
Only problem with talent trees is that the community will find the best build and then we will see majority if not all adapt to that build. There will always be some players who play with their own build, but they too will convert when they find out that they are doing less damage or healing then those with the so called best build.

Those are specs, not talent trees. Maybe you're getting the two confused? I don't really think specs would work well in FFXIV without completely redesigning the game, but talent trees could find a home, especially now that they're three simple choices you make and you can swap them at inns/major cities at will.Ugh...I certainly would hate going through the early iterations of such a system again. To be honest, I wouldn't really mind that as long as you can play classes / jobs in different ways... Let single DPS jobs have different playstyles and give the tank and healer jobs the ability to become a pure DPS, too. I'd really like a talent system similar to WoW in this game. Sure, it has been out for a long time now, but the possibilities are really nice. Like to be a shiny knight surrounded by holy light but don't want to tank? Be a DPS or Heal Paladin! Or do you think Shamans look cool and have interesting lore but don't want to become a caster? Well then smash some heads in as an enhancement (melee) Shaman!Only problem with talent trees is that the community will find the best build and then we will see majority if not all adapt to that build. Yeah, more alternatives would be really nice.
Probably not what this thread is referring to, but in a game called Lotro they added "trait" trees. It gave each class the opportunity to play how they want. You could pick from 3 trees that significantly changes your playstyle. I hope to see something like that added in. Kinda broke pvp though, but only because "Monster players" (opposing side) didn't have access to a lot of the things the normal players had. Kinda a shame too v.v.

The fact that you're so enthusiastic about this should tell you exactly why this is a terrible, terrible idea.
The vast, vast, VAST majority of players want to play as DPS. Almost all duty finder queues in the game are limited by the number of tanks available. You propose to take the two most popular tanking jobs... and give players the option to turn them into DPS. Taking tanks OUT of the tanking pool, and putting them into the DPS pool.
Expect three hour queues to be the norm for DPS. My soul is screaming.
And the healers too??? what is this I don't even

That's for sure but in my opinion that depends on your mindset of the game.Only problem with talent trees is that the community will find the best build and then we will see majority if not all adapt to that build. There will always be some players who play with their own build, but they too will convert when they find out that they are doing less damage or healing then those with the so called best build.
I will take GW2 for example, the skill tree is very interesting and enjoyable and i would love to play something like a water mage or a black mage specialized in one element.

They could add tank specs to other classes to compensate that a bit. Also, I don't think this would change the composition of tanks, dps and healers in this game if the specs themselves are fun enough to play. The fact that you're so enthusiastic about this should tell you exactly why this is a terrible, terrible idea.

Having more options is always a good thing in my opinion.

Yes - it was 5-50 gold IIRC back then. And then later came dual spec. I honestly don't know what happened later, last I heard people were clamoring for more specs because hybrids had to choose between a PvP optimal spec and a PvE optimal spec for a different role as secondary spec. I zapped out at that point.

This are what talent trees used to look like. You weren't locked out of any of the three, you could pick freely provided you had enough points in it. It was when the dungeon finder came along that it got more rigid and role defining, because nobody wanted a shadow priest or enhancement shaman healer - I wouldn't know, but I wager you cannot queue as tank if you don't have a tank spec these days? Or does that go over proving grounds stuff? I dunno.
Personally, I find jobs to be vastly superior to talent customization, so unless you're swimming in workforce and don't know what to do with your ressources, I'd prefer the prior.

They've changed the talent system a LOT since you last played. You pick from a choice of three abilities every 15 levels, and there's no overlapping with other specs anymore. Talents can be swapped FOR FREE in a town or "rest" area straight from the interface (no NPCs needed), OR out in the field/in a raid/dungeon with a crafted item made from scribes. It's ridiculously experiment-friendly now. You can even change your spec under those same conditions, iirc, but I don't think specs fit well with this game's current design so thats kind of irrelevant.
My point is, I think what people are asking for is something more akin to WoW's CURRENT talent system over the one from vanilla, which was seriously noob-unfriendly like most everything from that game back then (lol).
