I've seen plenty of very slow or "lacking" DPS but I don't tell them how to play unless it's advice on their particular job. For example, the Paladin who never used Flash and struggled to hold AoE threat. Your idea of "good advice" is telling someone to do something out of the scope of their position. Also, it's not being obstinate to stand up for what you believe in.

This 12 gcd thing is ridiculous you guys are talking about is ridiculous. That's no way to judge a healers performance. Spamming Cure and Stone 1 would use all 12 gcd but you aren't going to get far by doing that. What about Regen ticks? Or crits?

And you've lost the point of the OP's post. Here's a guy who admitted to having no experience EVER healing in MMOs. Telling him he HAS to dps as a healer is only going to hinder him learning how to HEAL to the best of his ability.

You'll learn how to dps and Stance Dance as a healer just from leveling with quests and whatnot. Until then, just focus on healing in whatever duty you are in. That's your job and nobody else can do it. Heal the damage taken if it's going to kill someone or they die. The tank dies and everyone will die. You die and everyone will die.

Bottom line... Experience is the only way to know when to dps as a healer.

With that being said thought, the most efficient way of doing your job is to always be doing something. Time spent standing around could be time spend rebuffing, healing, or dpsing.

I just don't recommend a new healer with zero experience to try going all-in like ysome of you are telling him to. It's only going to make another crappy healer for you to complain to in DF wipes.

These misleading elitist troll attitudes do nobody any good.

A healer's job is to heal. There is no arguing that. However, saying that a healer has to DPS is debatable. As I've said more than once... if I want to DPS, i'll switch my stone from Sch to Smn.

TIL playing a class to a high standard utilising skill is being an "elitist troll".

I chose healer because you'll always have room to carry. It's a very nice thing to have. DPS failing a mechanic? Cleric Stance on and save the day! You are 1000x better at going into cleric stance and dpsing, than a dps is at dropping their rotation and healing. Healers have a remarkably good life in ffxiv.

Telling someone that unless they play to your standard, then they're "bad" is being an elitist troll.

It's not someone's arbitrary "standard" - it's a legitimate skill ceiling. If there are varying degrees of involvement in play, from just healing to going full tilt on DPS, then we can call the left end of that spectrum "bad", and the right end of it "good". Those who tend to do only the minimum required of their job fall on the left end of this spectrum. DarkmoonVael has chosen to call this end "bad". You can call it whatever you want, but it's definitely not "good".

It's legitimate in your eyes. I could do it if I wanted to, I just don't want to. That's my choice to make. Not yours nor anyone else's. And of course, that's your opinion (or his opinion) and others disagree. I consider a healer good if the group stays alive. You may disagree with that which is fine and I can respect other's opinions however, I'm only stating what I think is right without condescending people who disagree with me and calling them "bad." That's called being an "elitist." There is nothing officially documented saying that one opinion is the correct one.

Similarly, a point guard on a basketball team could say, "Hey I'm passing the ball, look three assists! I'm not bad". Meh. I'd rather be a Jason Kidd or Steph Curry and put points on the board.

Sorry, I'm not a sports fan so that doesn't mean anything to me. I'm sure it means something along the lines of someone who could do more. Regardless, we're not going to change each other's minds. We all play how we want to. I just wanted to stress to the OP not to feel pressured into doing something if they do not want to and letting them know that if they choose not to, there are no repercussions other than randoms hiding behind their keyboards calling you names on the forums.
