Crafting is where the game gets really complicated. If one looks at the problem solo and face on, it looks insurmountable. Leveling up gathers to max levels and making use of battle retainers and your own augmented gathering can greatly cut down on parts of the tedium and massively cut costs. None the less crafting is still a very intimidating job.
Much of this intimidation and annoyance becomes squashed through being able to start leveraging the market board, buying odds and ends other people don't need for cheep, and using those cheep parts to make goods (for leveling and sales). While leveling I would always look for a few low material options which looked "viable" for leveling. I would also make sure to check which items could be handed in as Leve Quests (where you hand in your crafted items for extra XP). And then I would check the market for costs on odds and ends that I might have to farm. Usually my goal while leveling would be to find something where I could buy the tedious items from the market board. I still do this same process today at max level using http://www.garlandtools.org/db/ to see where items come from and while making items to sell.
Ultimately if you train yourself to treat the market board as variable priced vender you'll find crafting much easier to approach in terms of time invested.
With all of this said, you will end up seeing that leveling up a battle/gathering class first and using ample extra gil to push your way through crafting (taking a loss on goods) will feel backwards but be a much more efficient use of your time. As it stands right now if you wanted to level only your crafting classes first, it would be a VERY intimidating process, primarily because of gil inflation, an expansion being out, and the lack of use of old world goods. In the past I have told people with a strong head, and ample determination you could level all your crafters first by buying materials and selling goods (I did this leveling all my crafters to 50 before coming anywhere near finishing the main quest on my bard). None the less with the expansion out you would have to be very market savey and patient to do this nowdays.
