should SE delete characters that were never used

The arguments for this idea essentially boil down to someone has something someone else wants so they want to get SE to give it to them. Apply this logic to anything else in the game and you see how absurd it is. You want me house? have SE kick me out so you can take it. Like my glam? have SE delete my char so you can use it. Like that rare mount I got? Have SE take it from me so you can grab it.

SE should not be doing this and people shouldn't be encouraging it either. Pick a different name, its not hard!

Well the house thing SE already kicks people out if they don't use the house for set period of time and the others are glam, mount? Are a moot point cause nothing stopping person from getting the same glam/mount.

And there's nothing stopping someone from putting that extra space or apostrophe or letter in the name to have their own version of a name either. The logic is absurd no matter what you apply it to. There is no reason to delete characters or remove names from characters just so someone can have that exact one.

The original suggestion of deleting inactive characters definitely isn't going to happen as there's no real reason to do that.

A name purge, on the other hand, would be pretty much in line with other MMOs and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens sooner or later. Sure, technically there are almost infinite name combinations that people can use, and nobody is entitled to any particular name. But it's a negative experience when a new player tries to create a character and every name they come up with is taken, even those from the in-game generator.

I'd expect that players would be notified well ahead of time so they would have the chance to log into their accounts/characters before inactive characters' names would be put up for grabs. After that, if you're not using the name and you don't care enough to log in and show you still want it, it seems reasonable for SE to let someone else have it.

Not necessarily. Some mounts and glams are locked behind events that happened years ago that I can't get. And I'm ok with that. I wasn't here. I am not gonna cry to devs to let me have it anyway.

It's not that hard to guess.

Why do people buy the Scions costumes in the Mog Station? Why did people ask for the FFXIII items to be brought back again, having missed it? Why do people create glamours to cosplay characters from other fandoms (seriously, there's whole threads of them just here), or for that matter, why do people cosplay IRL? Why do people make covers of songs others played? Why do people write fanfictions?

Believe it or not, there are people out there with different tastes as you, who like to re-create their favorite characters from other fandoms and put them in another universe such as a MMORPG's, to live that game's adventure as their favorite hero/heroine. It's not that hard to picture, and there is nothing wrong with it either. It's apples and oranges, otherwise we should also despise those who draw fanarts instead of doing original artworks, or who make cosplay costumes instead of doing original designs. Neither is more "noble", it's just two different ways to play.

I don't think characters should be deleted, but yes, I'd make names up for grabs for inactive characters, to avoid occurrences such as that screenshot. And not limited to anime or videogame names. I'd not think of locking my own real life name+surname on so many servers either, because that's just obstructive for whoever would want to use it.
