    I WANT to play bard, but I don't want to go through playing a completely unrelated class to be able to play that role. :|

    As far as I know you only need to level archer to 30 to be able to get the bard quest, after that you can put the job on any class you like, I would imagine it would be better off on a mage class anyway.
