Taking that part of what he said and reading it as it's written (and not what he meant)... that's the situation we have. Tanks can use robes, but mages can't use full plate. And people are complaining. Maybe he should get the hint soon?
As for the whole "mages can't wear heavy armour because magic" argument... It's glamour. Illusions. You're not running around in heavy plate. Your robe just takes on the illusion of being plate. It doesn't protect any better just because it looks like a tincan.
And vice versa, running around in Coerthas in a glamoured-on bikini means you're most likely not freezing your butt off. Because it's not really a bikini. It just looks that way. Maybe it should even offer bonuses in combat both due to the initial shock value and then because people's weapons just bounce off your seemingly bare skin as though it was actual armour ^_~
(Yes, that last bit was a joke.)
Edit: I'm all for keeping JOB-specific gear glamour-restricted to that job due to being as iconic as they are, but the looser restricted gear really should be opened up. Only for glamour, of course, not for equipping.

Hang on...Aren't we getting the house fortemps all class chainmail at some point? Because that makes the restriction look even dumber in that case.
Oh hey nothing was here

This game has turned into Tanks that want to wear underwear and dresses, to caster's who want to wear heavy tank armor.

I want giant shoulderpads. >_> Tanking without them feels wrong somehow.
Yeah it gets glamoured on during that battle. Even casters. And they expressed interest in bringing that over. Therefore if it happens would that not open the floodgates of armored mages?
Yeah, I'm fine keeping stuff like the WHM AF/AF2 and stuff like that restricted (If that is what you meant by Job-specific stuff). I mean, I don't really get how we have stuff like the holy rainbow shirt of fending among other stuff which has about the same metal on it as the Daystar set for tanks that's just regular unglamoured armor, but the idea of heavy plate, glamour or actual armor, for casters doesn't seem right to some folks.
Well, most people in this game tend to opt for the underwear and dresses from what I've seen. I just like heavy armor and wish I could wear it while I heal or cast spells or punch stuff.
I'm a giant dragon and heretic sympathizer and I love character customization
See my thread about equalizing the heights for men and women of each race! http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/253435-A-suggestion-regarding-height.
I still want my Ronin WArrior armor as nin and mnk so I can run around and feel like a gundam. Everytime I see another dress attached..let alone all the maid glamour now, Im sure somewhere in the world a kitten is in his fluffy bed killing lalas. Its just wrong. Yoshi really needs to lift these restrictions. His delusions of player complaints are baseless.
