Clicked because I would like that but it'd be kinda scary thinking about the WoL eating enemies like a snake or maybe I'm scary for thinking that's how it'll be done.

Don't like tht if u take away swords tht mess blue mage up
By that logic, Strago is messed up because he uses daggers and caster rods, as is Quina because of the giant fork, along with Quistis (whip) and Khimari (spear). >.>
Unlike other jobs, Blue Mage is not dependent on a weapon for identity. BLU's weapon could be a sharpened stick or a sack with a brick in it and it'd still be a blue mage as long as it uses monster skills.
Mileage varies when it comes to that. I'm guessing you're trying to refer to the inevitable pruning of spells available to BLU, though limiting spell selection for balance purposes is not what I would call simplification or homogenization. Most blue magic in general is just beast-flavored attack magic, with some spells either being overpowered as hell or extremely situational (the Lv.XX line of spells comes to mind). Hell, my suggesting Bad Breath, Moon Flute and White Wind is already pushing the envelope, as Moon Flute and White Wind already allow the BLU to provide notably better utility than BLM or SMN.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
Ya blue mage was using alot of weapons but the blue mage everyone want is the one from FF11 i understand where u are coming from but i hve to say blue mage on 11 was the best an i know if thy add it alot of ppl will pay for FF14 because of blue mage if thy r smart thy should think on tht
I want the Blue Mage from FF5. AKA the original. My lvl5 Death, my Bad Breath, Dark Spark, 1000 Needles, M-missile etc.
Blue Mage was all about acquiring monster skills and using them to break the game or the traditional battle system.
Oh but this MMO is about balance and scripted encounters so I guess it just wouldn't work at all. I mean you could add it but it probably won't function traditionally. See BLM, SMN, DRK, etc.
Ditto ^
V had the best blue mage, second best is XI's
But they call me crazy for even suggesting FFXIV break the mold just a little, but no one wants new things. Oh well if Blue Mage comes to XIV I don't have to play it, collecting mandatory spells every 5 levels isn't appealing at all. Even if you could go out and get your own spells there's the trouble of fitting it in the holy trinity and players will eventually figure out what spells you need to bring to every dungeon because of "muh meta"
Ha. Guess I am the only one crazy enough to want the Blue Mage in a tank roll.
Hear me out - give a Trait where they add their defenses together (physical and magic defense), and give them Caster/Healer gear. That gives them higher defense than the other tanks, but a smaller HP pool. Maybe allow DoW accessories, have the Saber pack some extra VIT, or add another trait that buffs that a bit.
As for abilities, just as examples -
White Wind - area heal or regen, so earning healing enmity and mitigating damage at the same time
Mighty Guard - mitigating damage
Goblin Punch - enmity generation
Mantra Missile/Magick - ranged enmity generation
Magick Hammer - stun target
Angel Whisper - not-dead-yet button
War Dance - stance change
Night - sleep
Roar/Eerie Sound Wave - dispel buffs
Force Field - mitigate one big hit
Bad Breath - mitigate damage by debuffing the enemies
Pumpkin Head/Frog Drop - grindable damage
1000 Needles - either a big hit or an area of effect enmity generator
Grand Delta/Quasar - big damage move if needed
Control - a Provoke
Self-Destruct - everyone else is dead, so why not?
Have some abilities arrive via quests (say, taught from Hoary Boulder, who has brought the job from overseas and is teaching things local critters don't know), with some extras you can add by clearing dungeons or hunting marks. For example, you have to clear Aurum Vale as a Blue Mage for Bad Breath. Maybe add some TP costs to the big ones so you have to choose what alternates to bring along.
My two Mhachi farthings, anyway.

yeah i can see blu making an interesting tank, i really wouldnt expect the monster skills hunting but maybe an ability that can tap into a monster for a 1 time use cd ability(ie:draw(like ast draws card --> learn/observe then use return ability cd to execute, or any number of mechanics. i only say tank would be acceptable to me, since the job has always had to succomb and survive the enemies attack to 'mimic' oh hey they could probably mix the two jobs idk
So anyway, if we get blue mage I'm fairly certain there won't be any real customization, it will be highly structured with all of the spells and abilities done solely through job quests with every ability focused solely on supporting whatever it's role is with a defensive and offensive cooldown thrown in here and there. The only spell I really want to see is Big Guard as a defensive cooldown and it's aoe being Shockwave Pulsar because of reasons.
