I'm starting to wonder about the situation over there. It sounds odd to me that one nuclear power plant can cause so much trouble to the entire nation's power grid. I know Japan is a small country, but they have several power stations, and according to the news, they only depend on nuclear energy for about a third of their electrical power. It's closing in on a week since the major quake. I find it hard to believe that the power grid at least in Tokyo, which wasn't hit that hard, hasn't been stabilized. I'm not a civil engineer, though.

Not to denigrate the degree of this tragedy, but remember that independent of their culture and traditions, Japan is still a modern capitalist society. Money is always the primary concern where capitalism is involved, regardless of what the folks in charge say. That goes for SE, too. Were it not financially beneficial in some way, you better believe those servers would be up and running right now.

I don't think the situation at Fukushima has anything to do with the power shortage. It was not only the nuclear plant that got affected, the whole infrastructure in Japan collapsed. This goes beyond just the nuclear power plants.

    Yes, this: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...803-16-2011%29

If I understood this right, since their German and French translators are MIA they're working on things that don't require translations for the time being. Sounds reasonable enough. Obviously due to worrying for their families and the blackouts they can't work as much as they want to, but they're not giving up.

Going back to work is the best thing they can do for Japan right now.

Take a look at The Daily Show's website (if you live in the U.S.) and you can watch just about every episode they've done since Jon Stewart took over. Watch Jon Stewart's monologue from their first show after 9-11.

Yeah, 9-11 isn't remotely anywhere near the severity of this earthquake, but I use the example because it was a big deal localized to New York City, which is where The Daily Show is produced.

Been following this closely on the news as my sister-in-laws family lives in Tokyo so just wanted to stop by and agree with most of the posts on here that shutting down the servers for a week..or...two....or 20 would be understood by the majority of the gamming community. After all it is a video game and the deaths involved are not real. Take care of your families and we can get back to gamming when the time is right

My brother happens to be a music producer also and he and some of his friends are planning a benifit concert which is awesome. I will post details at later date as I get them for anyone that might be interested. Not sure even where it is going to be just yet but will keep anyone interested posted.

I heard a report saying 30% of the electricity comes from the northern region. The nuke plant everyone focusing on isn't the only problem.

You could having other plants needing to under go proper inspection before being reactivated.

Fuel Shortage for other non-nuke power plants due to railways and other transportation method being disabled.

Transmission lines that need to be rebuilt, and other issues which would cause such a shortage. The report I saw said they have a 10 million KW shortage atm.

My town after hurricane Ivan had 90% of its electrical grid destroyed. It took two weeks for our home to get power again with crews from around the country working to rebuild the grid. This was just from a Cat 4 hurricane not anywhere near the same destruction level.

I'm honestly surprised they'll only be off for a week.
