A Letter TO the Producer Regarding Character Creation

Dear Yoshi-P,

I recently convinced some of my friends to give FFXIV a shot. They are basically fed up with WoW and want to try something new, but familiar. After doing some research they got really excited and bought the base game. I invited them with the friend campaign, and they tried to make a character on my server. My server is Balmung...


They cannot create characters there, because the server is constantly restricted, even very early in the morning. Now, I am a member of a really great FC on Balmung and I do not want to leave, or make a new character and start over, so ideally I would like my friends to be able to join me there. But they can't. Their first impression of the game is that they cannot play it.

I understand that there may be significant issues with changing the current character creation system that I am not familiar with. I get that I may not have the whole story, I really do. But why is the system the way it is? Is it possible to change the system such that people can make characters on a high population server like Balmung, regardless of the current server population? After all, they would still have to queue to enter the server, right? This is the current system employed by World of Warcraft.

Please please please fix this! FFXIV is constantly growing in popularity and as it does so, more and more people are going to experience the game for the first time. Do not let this first impression be one of inconvenience or annoyance!

As a player on Balmung, I wouldn't be happy if I had to sit in a queue to play every day. The fact that Balmung is also the unofficial RP server would mean that these people would flock to the server once it opened and the queue would just get longer by the day. No thanks.

One change I would like to see is removing restrictions when it comes to making alts. I can create up to 8 characters in a single server, but the creation restriction puts a stop to that. If I have a character on a server already, it would be nice to be able to make alts without worrying if the server is open or not. After all, I'm not logging in with 8 characters, only 1 will only ever be logged in at a time so it's not really making more congestion.

One plus side though, Balmung seems free of RMT /tells because they can never manage to get characters made either.

Something related, but not related. I'd personally like to see SE open up free transfers off of high populated worlds to reduce some of the congestion. Lots of people want to be on balmung, but I'm sure there are others who don't wish to be there anymore, and if they could leave as a group for free to another server they would jump at the chance.

it is a good point, I had to pay to transfer from NA to an EU server, despite the fact EU servers didn't exist when I started playing. I had to move because the server was like a ghost town when EU servers did open up and I had to pay to transfer.

It doesn't just seem free of RMT tells, it is free of them! I haven't received one, or even seen an RMT shout since before 3.0, and I play a lot.
