My understanding is you need to have all the pre-quests for all GC. This is excluding darkhold and Toto-rak

This confuses me, The Ul'dah one just asked me if I wanted to be a recruit after doing the first quest, but it still wont let me pledge to Gridania's one.

You need to complete all the speech quests before joining a GC

All 3 Grand Companies have a speech Quest.

You Must complete all 3.

Then you can speak to the Officer at the grand company to join.

This is correct. I had to go back and do a quest for the Maelstrom as a recruit in order to join a company.

Also, it is kind of bullshitty that you have to do a quest as a recruit for each company before you can permanently join one. It wasn't a big deal for me since I only had to go back and do one - but still. I saw a LOT of people getting very frustrated (including people in my own LS) because they didn't know why it wasn't letting them take the speech quests.
