No, it was because they wanted to mass produce armour sets that didn't need to be custom-fit to each race.
Male Miqo'te had little to do with it.
I'd like the roundness to come back, mind you.
We had no advanced warning. It was just a screenshot.
That's also why there's so few pictures of the 1.0 heavy Darklight set. It actually gave plate armour to the tail on Miqo'te. But that was taken out too. Wouldn't mind some extra protection back there either!

I can't believe people have complained about this. It's now more a joke than a serious complaint. I personally believe that the so called "booty-loss" is not from changes made from the transition from 1.0 to 2.0, but rather w/ people's less-than-reliable memories of how 1.0 looked.
People forget that in 1.0 a character's body shape was very depended on the gear equipped. The two midlander's in the following screenshot demonstrate this (center and far left)...
A flat "booty"
A rounded "booty"
Thus a character's "booty" was still dependent on the gear equipped. Like it is now.

Well there's a reason why people are asking specifically for the Miqo'te buttocks back, which was actually well rounded in it's definition.
The devs did make a post regarding the model changes they went through, so it wasn't just dependent on gear, but the core model was changed as well.

SE said they'd have to redo armor models. This is also why we don't get non humanoid races. People holding out hope for graphics upgrades when the PS3 loses support are holding onto a dream. I don't think SE is likely to ever go back and redo anything.
Denial is ever so comforting for those who hold onto that hope.
Current ass doesnt bother me at all.
