That's what I really don't like about it. That it looks like a parody. If they wanted to make an actual pompadour style, that would be cool, but it should look more like:
Instead of that, we get this over-exaggerated caricature that's just parodying the style.
(It's sort of like when we got the afro, but they made it look more like a clown wig instead. I don't like that one either.)
But oh well, at least the other new styles look nice.

I'm familiar with the caricature depiction in a lot of manga and anime, and you're undoubtedly right that that's where this comes from. In a work who's depictions involve a lot of caricature (as these manga and anime often do) it can work. I just don't think it fits well within the artistic style of this game, where character proportions and facial features are going for a more realistic look (despite the fantasy elements tacked on). Here, I think a more realistic depiction would have fit better with the game's overall aesthetic.
