Fishing Gear Progression -- 2016 Style

Okay, so I have FSH at 51, completed all 2.0 FSH quests... and now I've run face-first into a brick wall concerning my DoL gear progression.

For my DoL classes, I have a full HQ Raptorskin set, melded sparingly with tier 1 materia here and there. With this, and the Halcyon Rod, I'm sitting at 234 gathering and 205 perception on FSH, no food or FC buffs.

So this leaves me somewhere short of 60 to 150 gathering short of where I need to be to get Talan's Super Special Supra stuff. All the resources I've found so far seem to be stuck back in 2015, so I really need some up-to-date information on this. Crafting the Forager's set is just plain impossible for me at this point, so I've decided to try going for the Archaeoskin set, which would be easier to HQ.

My biggest question is, even if I have the Archaeoskin set in HQ, would I still have to meld it fully just to meet those horrific Gathering requirements for FSH? And, just as an aside, who on earth do I have to kill for creating these restrictions?

I never bothered with the supra. I just got the i55 set at 50, and upgraded once that was finished spiritbonding.

The lv 51 set already has better stats than anything lv 50 pre Heavensward for fisher. The information is outdated because it's not that useful anymore unless you're going after achievements. What you could focus on is to get the lv 51 set for starters and focus getting to lv 60 instead. Then comes all the red script gear collecting and what ever Square Enix is tossing for us gatherers the next patch. With just NQ gear of the lv 51+ sets you're pretty much quite good to go after the old fishies. What comes to the restrictions, fishing is just a hobby in this game. It's meant to be a challenge to kill time in a way or another.

I purchased the vendor i100 Dhalmelskin set at 55. Will I need to upgrade my fishing gear before 60? At 57 still wearing it now.

If you start losing the catch, as in normal fish and can't reel it up, then it's time to upgrade gear. As long as you meet the gathering requirements for a fish X then upgrading the gear isn't currently necessary. I do remember needing to upgrade my gear when I did the level 60 fisher quest.

I have the whole set of fishing red scrip gear, but probably get replaced soon.

Mysterysword, if you had a fully melded artisan's set you would be OK to L55. As you don't, just get the archeoskin set which does not have to be fully melded. Also upgrade your rod to Lucis if you can, it will be good to 58 or so.

just level up more buy vender gear and then at 60 worry about getting the bis slot stuff, although not to much as theres more than likely new gear in next patch.

and no you shouldnt need to meld until you have the bis set and then that depends on whether you went with crafied or traded.
