Landborne, Leafborne, and Seaborne Aethersands are annoying.
My personal experience is that an 8/8 almost always guarantees at least an NQ Land/Leaf/Sea. The RNG shift going down for 8/8 to 7/8 is kinda shit though, still it's more prudent to aim for a single 8/8 than multiples of 6-7/8.
I've no idea, tbh. I've had a level 58 8/8 break down into clusters and crystals today, and have had other lesser level 58s give me land/leaf/dawn/dusk. It feels like RNG. They should at least make it so that you get dawn. >.>;

It rather annoyed me to have level 60 8/8 break down into crystals and clusters. That is a big part of the reason I say those Aethersands are annoying. They are too RNG heavy.
I doubt it, but I really hope that we find those Aethersands on some 4 star nodes somewhere, as direct mining gathers.
Yeah, that's why I don't exclusively go for the 60s. I'll mine a 58 if it pops up. I'm putting faith in bulk rather than in the rare 60 that I somehow get to 8/8. I've gotten land and leaf from the 58s and a single dusk sand from a level 60 8/8. I know the "chances" are better with the higher level but I do okay with 20 5+ 58s vs. one or two 8/8 60s. Dawn sells well on my server anyway.
Depends on desynth classes also have in my opinion. For example since I have almost capped CUL desynth I can make more money from fishing and desynthing fish for tier IV materias/water clusters and dark matter than the gil I would make merely gathering with MIN or BOT. If gathering alone without desynth though in my experience it completely depends on the demand at the time for materials. Botany for example used to make me more basic gil but then mining became more profitable and vice versa. Currently I use fishing for most of my gil making however simply because of my CUL desynth on the fish.
I've made so much Gil from just bot alone. It can take in some pretty nice change.
