The extreme grind, the month long goals, partying up with people to take bosses down, basically nothing that MMOs are now. (I know that isn't your point I just got sad thinking about it)

My first MMO was a little crappy korean grinder called Luna Online. Looking back on it, it was completely terrible but I loved it lol.

White Knight Chronicles introduced me to the concept of MMO's but it isn't one.

My first MMO I played was Wow which I absolutely loathed for the 1st hour I played, so my first I actually got involved with would be Wizardry Online which I loved a bunch.

-The idea of becoming stronger through multiple trials using your skill and cunning
-Adventuring new and unexplored areas that takes time to maneuver and feels like a mysterious place....other than a rollercoaster ride.
    -Engaging character development and customization
-A combat system that doesn't include a target system as a requirement but a luxury. Like monster hunter or Demon Souls! Just feels right when you actually attack somethings feet and not attack it from 5 ft away when you look like your hitting the air. : p

I guess it was curiosity that got me into MMOs.

I heard all the hype surrounding EverQuest, back in 2000. How people were investing enough hours to equate a full time job plus overtime. How you could order a pizza through the game via the /pizza command. The only thing that kept me from really wanting to try it out was the fact that you needed a credit card to play.

Then my dad's then-girlfriend saw it at Best Buy on sale, while she was looking for a... actually, I don't know why she went to Best Buy, at least not anymore. Anyway, EverQuest: Ruins of Kunark was on sale. I tried to convince her NOT to buy it, but she did anyway.

She comes home, installs it on her PC, I set up an account and I start the game for the first time ever.

I played EverQuest for a couple of months, while I didn't particularly enjoy it enough to warrant wanting to stick with it, I saw why someone would want to invest so much time into playing the game.

I didn't touch another MMO RPG until I became frustrated with the changes Blizzard made to the online aspect of Diablo 2 and I saw the first Guild Wars was $20 and didn't require a subscription.

Then, in February 2007 I was playing Exalted online with a bunch of other players (because I have no one locally that plays games like Exalted, World of Darkness or Dungeons & Dragons) & they were all talking about WoW. I had known about WoW since before its release, but because I was expecting it to be exactly like EverQuest (WoW was created to essentially be the anti-EverQuest) I never bothered with when vanilla launched. But all this WoW talk piqued my curiosity enough for me to research available races and classes. And I dove right in. A month later I bought the Burning Crusade expansion and it's gone from there.

I've tried out nearly almost every MMO since then, even subscribed to Aion, EverQuest II and Warhammer Online for awhile. And that is, as they say, is that.

One thing a few of your responses reminded me of, is that I really got into MMO's because of MUDs. They weren't really quite the same thing, but they had a lot of similar aspects (leveling up, playing online etc.)

Anyone else come from the MUD world?

My first MMORPG was Runescape - everyone in school played that thing back in the day. lol
It was genuinely fun. It was my first introduction to MMO style grinding and was the first online community I had interacted extensively with.

The reason why I stopped was because my friends moved on to different games and I too was intrigued by the then new slew of Korean MMOs coming out at the time.

Though it wasn't an MMO in the traditional sense, my first foray into online gaming was Monster Hunter Tri. I loved being able to play and fight monsters with friends and messing around together, and I got hooked. After the servers went down, I gave Aion a try, but it nearly fried my computer and I wasn't feeling it, so I didn't bother renewing. WoW didn't appeal to me either, and I think the general reputation of MMOs put me off looking any further.

Then last year I heard FF had released an MMO playable on the PS4, and wanting a new game to try, I gave it a shot. Ended up hopelessly addicted, and here I am! Being relatively new to MMOs, it's been an... educational experience, to say the least.

My best friend nagged me for months to try WoW. I did. Became addicted. :P Then when she left WoW she wanted me to try Aion. I did. Loved it until I saw it was open world PvP. Quit until they added fast-track servers with no PvP. Can't remember how I got into Lord of the Rings Online, but I played that for years. Then someone from that game mentioned this one, and here I am. For me I love a game with a good story. Without a good story I won't stay interested. I love lore and plot twists and mysteries. Also Thancred, Alphinaud, and Jack help. *grins* =^^=

I heard a lot of chicks play MMO's. Since I'm hecka ugly in real life, I figured I could find one that liked me for my personality. That was 12 years ago; I've had no luck.
