Not sure if you can consider it an MMO (since there was only ever 4 members to a group), but what really got me started was Phantasy Star Online on the Gamecube. I absolutely loved that game and had some good friends I could go adventuring with for the latest loot. Getting my hands on the ethernet adaptor for the Gamecube wasn't exactly cheap or easy, since I had to order it in especially for the game. Worth it.
The next major MMO I would play would be FFXI, and I stuck with that for many, many years. I flirted with other MMO's all the while, but that remains my favourite MMO to date.
