You need 850 craftsmanship and 820 control after food.

I wouldn't bother melding until you have all the class-specific pieces and 170 accessories so you can see just how much you need.

Drop a CP +4 in the first slot and then fill the rest out with cheap Tier IIIs for now imo, and just re-meld once 3.3 comes out next month. We're getting some new way to get Tier IV crafting materia in 3.3, so it might be cheaper to overmeld then.

I agree with the 4 CP Materia first. I don't think you should worry too much about melding it though, not without a real plan!

Play around with this site : http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/CUL you can do CUL or any other crafting class. See what the caps are, and how you plan on melding the rest of the gear, and use that info to decide how you want to meld the MH i170 after that initial 4 CP. MH, OH, and Body are the main three that you have to have some sort of plan for, I believe. The rest, it's CP first, then meld to the caps as best you can.

I kind of disagree with melding 4cp in the first slot. If you really want to do a proper meld you'll want to meld the 100% slots with control IV or V first and put the cp IV in the first overmeld slot.
CP materia tends to be rather cheap and control very expensive.
Do make a plan on exactly what materia you want to meld in and ariyala can help with that, next do some research into materia prices and decide in which order to meld the materia.

Right now with grade V materia so rare/expensive its actually better to get the red scrip main/off hand and body pieces. Without those grade V's you'll never reach the stats of the red scrip piece with crafted. Unless perhaps you pentameld grade IV's.

In my opinion either use beet soup or meld craftsmanship to 850 for which you dont even need all ilvl 170/180 pieces and meld in control up to around 789 and the 31 control bonus of seafood stew brings you to 820 and enjoy a nice cp bonus.
