People always mistakenly underestimate much of the unpopular forms of content or methods. That's all right though, for as long as it remains unpopular, the handful that take up the reins will always come out on top for it.

And how much gil would that gear have translated into if you had turned it into GC seals, then ventures, then grade 3 thanalan soil/dragon's blood/that fish that deysnths into Quickarm IV/whatever? The answer is more than the desynth value.

If you mean the storyline handout HQ gear, that stuff was worth more at the MB than you could get from desynthing it.
