    Speculation regarding ARR fish?

I'm not sure what other reliable websites there are as far as fishing goes, but I've been using the "Cat became hungry" site for catching the ARR big fish. One comment I see a lot is having too much Gathering/Perception actually puts you out of a bracket and prevents you from catching (or hooking, the comments never specify) these fish.

Given that I'm not an expert on this, just how much truth, if any, is there to this? I'm actually tackling this in Forager's gear + Halcyon Supra right now, just so I don't run into this issue if there is any.

its just a myth, as much all regards around RNG.

Mostly the rules that applies for fishing are that you need a minimum gathering to catch a fish, and also you will need a minimum perception to can catch it HQ, those changes from fish to fish. So after that gathering your success of catching will increase each gathering until you reach a top limit, and exist some fixed % rate of fail catch that also depends on the fish, as much rarer fish, easier fish to escape no matter your stats

Big fish are slippery. Especially the later ones.

This website is also quite helpful: http://ffxivfisher.appspot.com/

Thanks for the help. I just finished Feast of Famine yesterday and I'm just one big fish away from saying goodbye to ARR fishing (minus whatever odd fish I might need for HW crafting). To this end I've been conflicted with regards to old lures and bait.

Bait I'm sure I can safely sell, the gil loss I can make up very easily, not to mention it's cheap in general to purchase if, say, I suddenly need Fish Glue again. Or more likely Shark Oil.

Lures, I'm not so sure. They're (comparatively) expensive to purchase, but I can't remember a fish that specifically required me to use a lure outside of big fish. Would it be safe to liquidate my lure stock on my retainer now that I'm pretty much done in ARR zones? I'm sort of hesitant ESPECIALLY since Feast of Famine just dropped 50 streamers in my lap.

If you are worried about needing ARR fish later on ... Level a Fishing retainer!

Trying to get endoceras at the moment... I think I caught 15 Coelacanthus and 0 Endoceras... getting frustrating.
Did you change gear or anything?

No, that's just RNG. Also, mind time/weather, appspot helps.
Was like 7 Coelas for me although, so you're in a bad luck.

Gathering/perception in-game descriptions could be totally better, with % chance or something. A lot of comments on ff14angler are mere speculations, especially the "Need powerful hookset" bs. That's not even knowing what skill does in the first place -_-
Bottom line - not all comments are good.

But riddle me this, how high is the chance that with a fair RNG and skill descriptions one would get 0 HQ Mahars out of 14 totally caught, all in Patience windows? 0 out of 6 caught in Patience II windows?
That's when the painful RNG starts

Pretty much agree with Lodinn. I didn't really have much trouble with any of the Feast of Famine fish. Naturally this was at the same time I was running Midas 20 times a day because my loot rolls sucked.

On the other hand... Magic Mushroom is my new nemesis, usurping the spot that Fingers created (1-hour window was just evil). I'm not entirely sure if RNG is at play here or if I'm not choosing the right bait. I need a HQ Common Sculpin to mooch this thing with, but between what I've tried (stem borer and glow worm), I seem to be faced with more Least-likely-to-bite Sculpins than anything. Is there any bait/lure that are particularly effective for catching common sculpin?

EDIT: Just been through another window of 0 bites from this thing.

According to http://en.ff14angler.com/ the spinner has a 63% to hook the common sculpin. Stem borer is 46.8% and glow worm is 29.7.

And even running a spinner it took my fisher alt many windows to land that ******.

Thank you, although I managed to nab it just before I saw this. Indeed, this one was such a jerk.
