To be fair, unlike World of Warcraft you can do all the classes on a single character. There's really no reason to have multiple characters.

That removes what's probably the biggest reason for having multiple characters in most other MMOs, but there are several other reasons that still apply:Those are the reasons that come to mind immediately (the first two because they're my own reasons, and the third is one I've heard from several people). There are probably other reasons as well. But the main point is that so long as there are reasons, and players who choose to have multiple characters, it would be good if SE didn't make it so difficult to coordinate passing items between them.
- Most quests (including all the story-driven ones) are one-time-only quests. Having multiple characters allows you to play through the stories multiple times.
- For roleplayers, or just those who view their characters as "characters" each having an identity of their own, drastic Fantasia changes (like race or gender) are too jarring to the sense of who your character is. In that case, multiple characters are the better way to be able to play around with different appearances and races. Just establish a different character for each race and gender you want to play.
- In endgame content, there are caps and lockouts that limit a player's ability to gear up multiple jobs quickly if they only play one character. But having different characters focusing on different jobs means that each of those jobs can gain the full week's worth of loot each week. (Of course this assumes the player has time enough to repeat the content with each character on a regular basis.)
While you can't add your characters to your friend list to mail things between them, you can see your other characters' retainers on the market board, so you can trade stuff between them that way. It's not the most convenient method but it's better than nothing.
