Since these are all glamour related items, and not items which help players pay to win, I think this game is doing a good job of catering to its community's interests. The Chinese got their region specific clothes along with their monster censorships. Now the Japanese will get these 711 items. The devs are looking for community feedback to see if players are interested in also having these items and if it's worth their time to port them over. Logic would dictate, since they mentioned on the live letter that they are discussing how to bring these items to Western markets, that they do care about bringing these items west.

Honestly this isn't even a discussion. They are trying to find ways to bring these items to players, and players are assuming they are getting the shaft on the first days of the announcement.

I Just hope the devs see this paranoia as a sign that we, the western players, defintly are interested in these items

This is a discussion, because this is the same path many an MMO has gone down, long before FFXIV, and we're ALL trying to say "Hold up! Don't be those guys!"

They've gone, what 3 years now, without turning into other MMOs? I think they're doing fine. The paranoia is unwarranted.

I can't speak for everyone as these are my personal opinions, but I will quickly retract my approval if they add pay to win items in the cash shop. In my whole time of playing this game, I can confidently say I'm a happy customer and I don't intend on stopping my subscription over silly glamour items which haven't been unconfirmed to come to the west.

(As a side note, I'm not singling you out. I'm just interested in this lovely debate and I have no idea when I'll hit my post limit. :3 )

WoW went close to a decade before turning to the darkest side, and selling level capped characters. We had called it time and time again, the more things they added to the Cash Shop. We called it when the most powerful pets for Pet Battles were in the Cash Shop, and we kept screaming words of warning until the day they finally started selling free levels. It's been done, time and time again. No matter how many times, there will always be players saying "Don't do it!" and others saying "That'll never happen here! Not in THIS MMO."

I can't speak from experience about wow since I've never played it, but wasn't the capped level characters added to help new players from feeling isolated? Unable to level up in a sea of dedicated lifetime subscribers? Seems like a slippery slope like what FFXI had to deal with.

That was their excuse, yes. But, amusingly enough, subscriber numbers kept going down. And down... And even further down. So, I have to ask. What new players?

Taken at face value, I'd consider WoW a massive success being able to sustain massive subscriptions since 2004. Of course it would inevitably decline, but you have to admit some people are curious to see what the fuss is about and try a game. When they can't even level up, those curious followers will wither up along with the extra money the game needs to stay relevant. FFXIV is still in its infancy, and when you consider most MMOs typically have a lifespan of about a decade, of course the numbers will begin to dwindle as devs works to create the next title.

Even PSO2, a widely successful free to play Japanese MMO, is starting to lose sales on its free to play money system. Of course, that could be in part due to their current selection of lackluster scratches, but they also haven't added much new content to entice people to want to spend money on the game. And the whole Yamato controversy going on.

FFXIV still has time to grow. Its devs are looking for feedback on issues and they are doing their best to cater to customer concerns on a subscription model and a cash shop. It's unrealistic to expect them to be able to cater to every single whim on the dot hours after announcing a community engagement program such as the 711 promotion.

As a side note, 711 is a widely popular convenience store in Japan, hence the promotion. With the amount of foot traffic that place gets in a day, the exposure to this game would explode. That's the kind of reasoning I'm assuming is why they're partaking in this promotion. PSO2 has also done many 711 promotions like this where you get exclusive items from going into the actual store, and it makes sense in a business sense.

Leveling in WoW took 1-2 weeks (could be done in a few days if dedicated) to hit max level even if they were a new player, assuming they had prior MMORPG experience. Besides that, new players also got a free level 90 boost with the purchase of Warlords of Draenor. There was really no reason to add boosts to the cash shop, especially at $60, it was just another way for them to make more money.
