Because going out and learning spells from random enemy encounters is not something they consider core to being a Blue Mage? Maybe they want the perks of a Blue Mage without having to go above and beyond what other jobs have to do to learn their own skills? It may be surprising, but I'd guess there's plenty of folks who love the idea of a mage slinging monster attacks who are less than enchanted with the idea of having to pray to RNGesus for hours on end to learn new spells.

Blue Mage, if added, will be just another job. It will have its own playstyle, and will attract players who enjoy that playstyle, but there's no reason it has to be more "special" than other jobs, any more than Monk is more "special" than Dragoon. It doesn't have to have more skills than other jobs in order to be a "true" Blue Mage. It doesn't have to acquire its skills in a special way in order to be a "true" Blue Mage. This is because what actually makes a "true" Blue Mage is a lot less specific than you might think - and, of course, very subjective.

I've been thinking about this as I've seen this topic come up of Blue Mages. And personally, I'm of the opinion that if the next expansion requires us to go to Ala Mhigo, I'm thinking that Blue Mage is a very solid and possible choice as the mage class.

So how does it work? Simple:

Instead of getting skills every x level, make it that at x level, you can unlock a skill by being attacked by said skill in the game. It might not be traditional BLU skills, but you use what your game has and incorporate the class into the game. That way, you're still getting attacked to get the skill, learn it, and your level 5 stuff could be enhancers to skills or some neat little feature to help empower the skill depending on what it does.

Just thinking outloud but you could easily just list a bunch of skills and you have to learn them by getting hit by them and surviving the battle (which would hinder having a high level sitting there and bringing you to get all the skills right away).

    Just food for thought.

For those who really want Blue Mage in this game: go take another look at Summoner and tell me if that's the treatment you want for your beloved blue mage.

Blue mage in the traditional sense really wouldn't have a place in an MMO setting like FFXIV. However, neither does a traditional black mage, which is why we have the astral/umbral gimmick, and thunder being on it's own with thundercloud.

Could do something like say, monk stances where a spell gives you a buff/stance that allows usage for another spell. If you're trying to follow class tradition to the nail, we wouldn't have a very funcitonal yet diverse cast in the game.

Personally i see it from a sales perspective, they obviously want to attract as many people as possible and so put jobs in which sound or look fantastical. Ninja, and all the Heavensward jobs being a prime example.

While Blue Mage will appeal to a certain number of people the very name will sound boring to the demographic that are on the fence about joining the game and for that mater i think Red Mage is out too (Even though it was mentioned in that event).

I think the next job or jobs to be added will be from tactics but will be one of the more exotic jobs.

    Samuari, Geomancer, Mystic etc,

Or possibly something from X-2 like Psychic.

Summoner is so good in this game, I don't know what you're talking about.
Aside from the puny Egis which I could understand why people are so upset about, their size does not matter.

They'll just lock your main Blue Magic behind Job quests and any that inflict status effects won't work on anything and or will just be artificial effects or debuffs that do damage or aid the party in some fashion which really isn't a Blue Mage at all since they thrived on using the attacks enemies used and with the same exact effects. RIP Bad Breath and Lvl 5 Death. Or they'd just make Blue Mage into some new class and betray it's namesake. Like Dark Knight, Summoner and what have you. Pffft.

So do you really want it? If you don't mind more classes to play as then great. But if you come in expecting Blue Mage from previous incarnations of the FF franchise then you'll be so disappointed.

    Uhh you're wrong, well partially.
Dark Knight has Blood Weapon and skills that not really drain, but restore HP and MP, but doesn't have the true Souleater gimmick of sacrificing HP.
Summoner can summon eikons, which are the Egi.

I'm not talking if they're a good effective class or not. More like "does it feel like a FF summoner?"
