But you know what sucks? Having a soul-sucking, thankless job. Programming, stocking shelves, custodial... to name a few. When I come into work (as a manager) I thank my employees. When I go out, I treat the staff with respect and give them genuine thanks for being great at what they do. Because I know how tough it is being in a position like this--I've been there myself. Their faces really, truly light up.
So maybe you should thank that Walmart employee sometime, and watch how it makes them feel. And ya know what? I get exceptional results from going out of my way to treat people well, even when I don't know them.
My bad, I thank Wal-mart employees, just not 'from the bottom of my heart'. I always say "thanks" to the staff who helps me find something, or to the cashier. Further, I meant that I don't go out of my way to thank them randomly. I'll thank them when they do something, but not just write up a letter at random. That's all I meant there.

That said, after working as a team leader of the front end of Target, I know that 99.9% of customers do not do this. 100% of my team thanked every guest every time (or at least they were supposed to).

In terms of Square Enix, I do not think I have ever heard the dev team thank us for being their customers (perhaps I've just missed it though?). This is outside of the automatic "Thank you for your payment" email.
