    Cartoony art style, hell no we won't go

    After the video of the ifrit battle weapon drops, I read a large amount of negative feedback about the stylization and artwork design. I thought the thm and conj weapons were done nicely, however the archer and gladiator *edit* also pugilist, man is it big */edit* maybe a bit much....

    But what do we want? Can we come up with some dialog to describe what we think the art style should be for ff14 moving forward. At launch there seemed to be a large amount of base (bland) gear. Moving forward I want to see more Final Fantasy brand flare, but not to the point where it breaks down the 4th wall by looking so over the top as to be out of place with the rest of the game design.

    here's a start:

    I'd like weapons and armor to look functional
    - Pugilist weapons would break your wrist if you used them irl. They should be attached at the forearm not held. (pet peeve)

    I'd like weapons to be realistically sized

    Armor shouldn't be overly stylized like a tron suit (ease up on the lines!)


    what else....stay on art style.

    I just want them to match the believable asthetic already introduced. Part of what attracted me to the game in the first place was the natural look of everything.

    I'd love to be able to look like Vanille or Yuna. Something more colourful and stylish but can still fit in with the clothing themes of the game. (Fur, leather, cloth, viewable jewellry/decorations)

    Classy and realistic equipment is what I want to see. Simplistic but visually appealing. If it wouldn't be practical to use in real life, it's too over-the-top.

    That doesn't mean it can't look cool. But the methods used to make them 'cool' differ. You simply don't increase the size and glow and stuff the model with ten different mish-mash designs to make it look more 'epic' or 'grand' or whatever.

    It takes skill to pull this off. While anyone can create a cool looking but completely over-the-top bow.

    I'm here to play Final Fantasy, I'm all for what old Final Fantasy design/arts gear. Realistic still yet Fantasy like.
    If it's all just plain realistic all the way I would just go play another history war/battle game... But same time I'm not asking to making it too fantasy like some other MMO's, has to be well balanced out. At least this is for gears/weapons.

    As for map design I say go full on Fantasy on 'some' areas

    Useless post, pple don't know what they want in these forums. They've been complaining for months about the bland and boring look of gear in this game and now that SE showed us some great looking weapons, pple start complaining.

    I juts ignore these people as they are all FF XI fan boys who have a huge alergic reaction whenever they see stuff that may remotely remind them of WOW.

    They are so stuck up on that game for the past 8 years and most of them never played any other FF title and use XI as the defining title for what a Final Fantasy game should be like, look like, etc. It is easy to see in their post as they only argument is always FFXI and don't see that every FF game is different from the previous. Different characters, style, art, gameplay, era etc....

    Every Final Fantasy had epic/fantasy looking weapons and here is a few example which IMO match with what SE has done with the Ifrit weapons.

    I actually thought the Ifrit designs looked fitting and well done, they just aren't for me. I much prefer something elegent and pretty to hellfire.

    But really, good job to the designers for those pieces.

    Oh look at that. Another person pretending to speak for the majority in an attempt to do some half-assed social engineering.

    It won't work.

    Some of the weapons look ugly, but there is nothing wrong with the art style.
