I was surprised to hear that she came from such a big family. Aren't miqo'te a not very fecund people (or am I just thinking of the relative rarity of the menfolk)? In any event raising kids without the presence of a father sounds rough. Her poor mother, having to cope with 5 children while the kids' fathers (I'm assuming fathers plural given the nature of Keeper families) are off continuing to sow their wild oats. Keeper men seem to have it made.

Not really, keeper of the moon culture prefers men and women to be separate. If you did the moogle quest, "The past is the story we never tell" it's said that it's "unnatural" for a man to be with only one woman, especially have a Seeker-like Harem.

Its been said many times that Keepers are matriarichal, so the mother had support of the rest of her clan, most likely.

They've never stated that miqo'te are any less fertile than any other race, just that the male birth rate is significantly lower than the female. We don't know much about keeper families (we've only really seen one) but given that sisterhood seems to be an important relationship to them, it is entirely possible that sisters raise their children together to help each other (not to mention older children can look out for younger).
