You don't have to dodge the AOE.

It's a gaze mechanic, simply face away from the boss and you won't get hit by it.

I apologize, i had not realized it was a gaze mechanic, despite the eyecon. Ive only run into that mechanic like twice before. It has a very nasty looking effect so it had not even occurred to me.
