It doesn't have to be exactly what is being suggested this is just one persons idea. But there should be areas that require effort to explore and have different mechanics in them that isn't an instance dungeonThat's an enormous amount of development time and resources for content that almost no one will do. Even hardcore explorers would probably only bother with it a handful of times. I used to spend hours checking every little nook and cranny in FFXI and WoW looking for little hidden gems. If SE added the OP's suggestion as he has it written I'd probably not bother with doing it at all. It sounds a lot more like an exercise in tedium than a fun afternoon of exploration.

Now let's say they do add this.
It takes a full group to explore or each mob takes say 5 to 10 mins to solo (like some FATE bosses).
The zone has all these mechanics that hinder you.
But it offers no rewards. So why are you there?
What are you searching for?
Just exploring to explore?
Now due to travel time to and within the zone and difficulty you've spent 3 hrs (due to monster battle/avoiding battle, zone elements that force detours, & etc) and now you've made it to about 5% of the map. Now what? Do you press on and log in field or turn around so you can log off for work/school/etc?
You've gotten no loot, no seals, no tomes.
Now once you return to the regular game...a week passes...
Do you even consider coming back to that zone?
Remember...FFXI forced players into zones because there was something there. From coffers for AF, dungeons to grind in, or in most cases...to pass through.
Honestly I am fine with everyone getting content they enjoy. I enjoy exploring, but I enjoy being solo. I'd love to explore a zone like this. But I do not want to fight stuff for 5+ minutes.
And The Sea Horror, Pirates, etc were NOT fun.
Making that tedious trip just to be killed over a random spawn of it was not cool!
That thing DID go below deck if 1 person slipped up and moved. It'd "hear" them then.. .x_x

This was a few pages back, but I just want to point out that just the fact that you call it 'meaningless optional content' is reason enough for this to never, ever happen.
They won't (and shouldn't) waste time and resources on meaningless content just to please some roleplayers. This game doesn't even have "official" roleplay servers, just what the players deemed as such.
(Just so you know, I have nothing against RP and I like it myself, just stating the facts.)

I don't FP at all but it would be nice to have areas in the open world that require more than running away or mashing 1. I said a few posts back even if it doesn't have rewards that was a bit harsh but it should open up new ways of doing things. This was a few pages back, but I just want to point out that just the fact that you call it 'meaningless optional content' is reason enough for this to never, ever happen.

A new map should be added that requires pieces to be put together so it takes sometime to get the whole thing and could only be used in that area.
Weekly bosses that are from tokens or tomes that you gather and could summon
A town that can be overrun by mobs kinda like those fates where if it is left untouched you can't go in unless you take it back.
Honestly to me it beats sitting in the tome camp either not doing anything or just queuing up for dungeons cause your bored.

Just to be clear I'm not arguing the zone should be tedious. Just that it should require more than the same attack or attack combo over and over again. Like as a sch, I shouldn't be able to just spam Broil. I should need to heal and buff myself sometimes, have my fairy out, etc. And If 2 other mobs end up linking, I should legitimately be in danger (kind of like what happens in some level synced fates).
Again it's not supposed to be a roadblock. Just provide the impression that there is actual danger in the world that -can- potentially kill you.
And it's not supposed to take 3 hours to get there. 15 min ship ride, and maybe 10 - 20 minutes to get through the zone if you dodge mobs (kind of like dodging guys in the gold saucer gate). With the -occasional- sound mob that aggros if you just run by.
MMORPGs have RPG in them. And RPGs are not all faceroll adventures where a single attack wins every fight. It doesnt have to be dark souls hard. But it can be made to feel like an actual final fantasy. Because right now, this open world feels like you hacked a ff game and gave yourself max attack and defense (e.g. nothing can really kill you unless you stand there doing nothing, and even then, it can take a long time to die)

Exactly this. They would have to put a lot of work in it for only a fistful of people who could actually be assed to go there.
I have various reasons for not wanting to get on board with this. Much of it boils down to time, convenience and longevity. I'm fairly certain based off of XI, that eventually the nostalgia and fun would wear off and we'd all be left begging for a system to make it more convenient to travel. Which is EXACTLY what XI now has in place. I've argued this point in other similar threads, but thats basically the jist of it.
I like parts of the idea and not parts of it. Personally, I think that a 10 minute boat ride is overkill - maybe a 1 time thing for story, but not a usual occurrence.
I'd say if we are keeping the aetheryte system as it is, we should have a crystal in the zone. I'd have a town/outpost that gives out daily quests, and maybe more daily quest givers scattered throughout.
I'd really like an end-game, daily quest focused zone - similar to WoW's current Tanaan Jungle, or Wildstar's Crimson Badlands (I think it has a few newer ones too). I envision there also being boss-fates that give more significant end-game rewards than the current fate system.

This just sounds like FFXI, We are moving forward not backwards XD
