You can't player search unless they're online, which is why he gave you his regular playtime.
As for crafting, it's usually not the best gear you can get, no. However it can net you decent gear to catch up with, or to just make yourself look good.

That is what I mean, yes.
It's also the main way of obtaining better crafting/gathering gear, since those classes lack dungeons to obtain gear from.
And as mentioned before, glamours. Looking good is half the battle.

Ever notice that your character might have a piece of gear while leveling that is 10 ilevels lower than your character level? Or that High Quality gear is about 25-30% stronger than an identical Normal Quality piece?

High quality gear is exclusively made by crafters, and is perfect for making sure that your leveling classes are as strong as possible at each stage of the game BEFORE hitting level cap.

But yeah, the goal of the endgame was for powerful gear to be "earned" rather than "bought", so endgame crafting gear is usually several stages weaker than what you get from raids and tomestones. In 3.1, the strongest crafting gear is ilevel 185, while even a peasant like me is wearing mostly ilevel 210 tomestone gear. The devs probably thought that if crafting gear was too powerful, it would cater to the gold selling market, and players would be using real money to buy their equipment. Allegedly, crafted gear will be much more useful in patch 3.2, but we'll wait and see if that is true.

The true usefulness of crafting is the cosmetic stuff that is made exclusively by them. Outfits, furniture, pets, and chocobo bardings are all things that crafts can make. Additionally, there are powerful "relic" weapons in the game that involve long and tedious questlines, of which acquiring crafted components is usually an aspect.

So crafting has its uses, but is entirely optional for most players. If you're just getting your feet wet, having a few crafter friends might be all you really need.

With the exception of the weapon, and a few job specific outfits (ilevel 50, 90, 200, 210), Bard and Machinists wear the exact same gear. There are several gear themes, and both Bard and Machinist belong to the "X of aiming" theme for + dexterity. The new gear in 3.2 will probably be uniform between bard and machinist.

All depends on what you want to make. The game tells you what you need to get when you attempt to make something. You can open your crafting log at any time.

You don't get "buy gil, best price, handiwork guarantee" trash messages on Odin? Sounds like a lovely place, because Ultros server is full of that junk advertising. Yeah, there are gold sellers in this game, and yes, the gold sellers get banned and the people who buy from them sometimes get punished. While it IS against the rules, devs don't police the game very well in that regard, so it is probably best that crafted gear ISN'T the best in the game.

You really only see RMT (real money trade) being a problem when there is a hot new item in the game, like a cool new outfit that is difficult to craft, or new expensive housing wards. You don't need to worry about the game being pay to win, although I sometimes suspect people are paying to look cool. lol.

Back to the question. So what exactly do you need to farm when you hit level 60? I use to play Diablo 3 alot and when you hit max level you farm, death breath, veil crystals and gems etc to craft better BiS items along with paragon levels etc etc. So what do I need to farm in FF14? Do you get good gear from crafting or slaying monsters? What exactly is the end game anyway? Raids? Crafting? Dungeons? How do you get good gear? If not by crafting then why are people farming x y z? what are they trying to craft that is must have in your character? Can someone list me the MUST farm items in FF14 when you hit max level. I really appreciate it.

    Enlighten me people
Allage Tomes, Hunt Seals (Allied is unlocked at 50 and Centurio ranks Between 52 and 58 I believe), Wolf Marks (If you do PvP), Gatherer/Crafter Scripts, and of course Gil and MGP.

Basically grinding currency like before but different kinds unlock at different points. Otherwise business as usual. Fight, Grind, Gather, Craft, dungeons, dungeons, and more dungeons. Maybe a raid and PvP match now and then if you're into them.

And I don't know about gear, but the only "Black Market" is the infuriating groups of RMT currency sellers that buying from will get you perma banned faster than a lvl 50 can kill an Ul'dah ground squirrel.

There's Market Board for most goods (Crafting materials included but I suggest getting gatherers leveled to save Gil) and the Mog Station is FF14's internet "Cash Shop" that only sells Glamour Gear, a few exclusive mounts, and old event items amongst other things.

Crafting is, tedious, but the skills do most of the work. More often than not getting the materials is the hard part. And nothing in this game is pay to win. Even the Best High Level Gear can't make up for a lack of effort. (Not a lot is needed but so many put in so little sadly)

Ever get those weird tells by some people spamming a gold selling website? Theres people that use Bots (computer controlled characters) to farm for gil and then sell them for actual money, which is against the ToS. The reason why crafting is weaker is to prevent said people from possibly using it to make a profit. It's constant struggle, one of these days I'll have to upload footage I captured of RMT bots at work, it's really crazy.

The game does have a marketboard for players to sell items for gil such as mats or crafted weapons and armor. It's not really pay to win, since thats an entirely different thing all together that involves an exchange of real money for an ingame advantage.

And apparently my post is late to the party cause I'm such a slow typer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
