Fact of the matter is that with the way most MMOs are made, and FFXIV especially, cutting corners is a must if you'd want anything to come out in a timely manner. Those same guys who have to model and mesh are also modeling and meshing for content years down the line. Before ARR even launched they were already in the concept art phases for Heavensward, we had an almost complete Shiva model almost an entire year before she was ever added into the game. These types of decisions over gear design and who wears what is made months to years in advance.

The developers have expressed that they want to stray away from allowing "out of character" glamours as much as possible. It's part of the reason why they continue to forbid players from glamouring outside their classes. They only tend to hand off sets out of role when appropriate, like SCoB's Caster and BRD sets.

The thread started asking why casters and healers keep getting the same armor meshes when new gear comes out. I'm providing context based off of the design philosophy given out by the developers multiple times and based off the reality of game development, especially one that tries it's hardest to push and release content on a very quick rigid schedule.

I really want to see that source that PS3 support is ending in 4.0 as I can;t see that happnening.

These things are not a PS3 limitation it's a deliberate action. Instancing zones means it's easier to load balance. Instanced zones mean that if one is busy it doesn't bring down the whole (game) region. They can also bring down a zone for maintence while the rest of the world in operating fine.

Inventory is not a client limitation it's a limitation on their very poor server code. The servers can't cope with that much data being passed around. But an extra sub fixes it, eh!

Youre expecting waaaaay too much from 4.0.

You are literally the dominoe waiting to be knocked down. Dont do this to yourself.

I just want 5 different looking designs per Tomestone/8 or 24 man raid. I understand having some classes share the look, but having 5 crammed together just because they use magic is junk.

Back when SE was just beginning to work on 3.0 and long before it came out, they were asked about PS3 support for it and assured everyone it would continue full PS3 support. They were pressed further about whether that would continue further, beyond 3.0 into 4.0 and their response was that they were only working on 3.0 at the time and couldn't make any promises about what would or would not be in 4.0, which they hadn't even started looking into yet. Players decided to take that "can't make any promises yet" answer as though it meant support would be stopping. (Of course, they only decided to pretend it meant PS3 support stopping. SE didn't make any promises about PC or PS4 support continuing that far either.) It was a way overblown reaction to a "no comment" answer.

Realistically, we've probably got a decade or so before they're likely to stop PS3 support. I hear they are stopping PS2 support for FFXI next month, though. Then the people who want PS3 to stop getting support will only be one console generation behind.

actually Niwashi, yoshida have clearly stated that the ps3 will receive the first expansion, but they can't promise to bring more.... mostly because of the ps3 limitation that are real. people thinking it don't affect the game are deluding themself.

a few example of stuff done because of the ps3 limitation:

    - the city at the start they was only one big area, but the ps3 capacity was not enough for load the giant map, then decide to cut the different town in 2-3 section
    - for long we didn't had the choice to have the whole bag showed, mostly because the ram of the ps3 can't load more than 256 mo of data, they did add the option for pc far after, because it was a low priority.
    - even the name of the item are fitting the capacity of the ps3 capacity.

because the main trouble of the ps3 is the ram... 256 mo of rams, is far not enough for a mmo modern people that think that they will do like the ps2 and ff11 are simply deluding themself really badly. FF11 never did get a critical success like FF14, never it had soo many player.

other point quite interesting, they did offer for a time an operation that was (for free) allowing you to switch from a ps3 version to a ps4 version. if they had no plan for abandon the ps3 they will have never ever done this.

ps: the ps3 version have already a lot of trouble of staibility and latency... i doubt it will support another add of content.

I don't even want healers to share gear. Healers and casters having the same looking gear is just insulting.

Well, ideally it should be 7 =/ Fending, Maiming, Striking, Scouting, Aiming, Healing, Casting. But I understand that budget and design team size can't support that more than every now and then, so I guess the categories with just one job in them could share now and then, potentially even those with two. As long as they didn't share with the same type every single time. But in that case, I'd say no more than three jobs should share gear set design. IMO.

So say one gearset was: Fending, Maiming/Striking, Scouting/Casting, Aiming, Healing
And the next one was: Fending, Maiming/Casting, Striking/Aiming, Scouting, Healing (it would be interesting to see Caster gear being a palette swap of Dragoon gear; Twelve know they're due for a bit more visible protection)
And so on. Switching around who get to share gear and who get to have their.... Damn. Looking at it now, it's pretty clear it would very quickly become a complaint of "tanks and healers NEVER have to share their designs D: PLZFIXNAO". And it's one that I agree with. So scratch most of that.

I guess when it comes down to it, I wouldn't really mind Tanks and Healers (the groups with three Jobs in them) share gearset design with other groups either, as long as there was some variation in who they were paired up with. So maybe healers get matched up with monks in one gearset, and tanks get matched up with bards/machinists, and something completely different the next time around.
I'd still like to keep at least one or two gear groups unique per gearset.

i like to thank everyone for the replies. i wrote this after shortly seeing the gear sets within the trailer so it was alot more opinionated that it should have been and i apologise for not taking into account all jobs/roles before posting and i was jealous of how much other roles (particulary tanks and drgs with the lore set) get more unique looking gear.
After reading through i like to thank the people who did the math to determine how much unique role/job gear they're is, and i personally feel that before healers get another set of unique gear that nin, mnk and casters should get them 1st, but i also feel that whom healers share with can be rotated around allowing a bigger distinction between the 5 DoM jobs compared to how we currently have with gear similarities in 3.X (excluding esoterics ofc).

I do however find the biggest offense with when caster and healers share gear is sch and smn due to them usually using the same book with few distinctions between them so when they share gear if they don't have they're pet summoned u can't tell them apart if they are the same colour ( ik petty compared to other problems in the game) i just think that it'll be nice to be like they're goes a nice looking sch or damn cool smn there at 1st glance without having to examine them like we do with most other jobs atm.

Yes i know i doubt i see such changes if any before 4.0 but i like to hope that such a thing will be eventually possible. ik i'm a dreamer :P
