They were likely planning to have Dark Knight branch off of Gladiator as a DpS originally, but cancelled that after they understood the mess they made when they based SMN/SCH off of the same Arcanist chassis.

That would have made sense. I was also under this impression, especially with the Gld lore being so radically different from Pld lore. On one hand we have the crowd pleasing, showboating, swordsman. On the other hand we have a modest, honour-bound, defender of the helpless. They're not totally incompatible, but they certainly don't follow one another. I was definitely expecting Gld to have multiple job branches in the future, until HW came out and squashed that idea. Now I keep hoping against all odds that Pld will get a complete overhaul, similar to the way War did way back in 2.1.

Supposedly, 3.2 will bring the changes we've been hoping to get, but I'm not going to hold my breath. After all the insignificant, or downright bad, changes they've made with Pld in the past, I can't shake the feeling that the upcoming changes will also fall short. That said, if they don't fall short, then I'll be all that much more happy with them; so, I'm still cautiously looking forward to 3.2.
