Im agree with you, is sometimes very annoying that

Please make it so it tells us if the fish sense something amiss when we use Cast or buffs so it doesn't waste our GP, time and Cordials.

So as way to prevent that happen, i personally allways do a single normal cast and hook (without loose the bait) before any buff, so this way you check if the annoying amiss message appears or not, so this way is a workaround as your suggestion
