Ul'dah, Hall of Flames, Into the Dark -- Text -- Aubrey's Incorrect Possessive

When the player is in the Hall of Flames in Ul'dah and speaks to Aubrey to begin the "Into the Dark (Ul'dah)" quest, the following text appears:

    "
    Aubrey: The Flames would send
    you, Mermentia. Travel to
Ishgard and take part in the
    attempt to reclaim Dzemael
    Darkhold. The commanding
    officer of House Fortemps' army
is Ser Artoirel. You will first
need to present yourself to him
    for duty.
    "

This is incorrect because the possessive form of "Fortemps'" on the sixth line of text should be "Fortemps's".

Please fix this issue by replacing "Fortemps'" with "Fortemps's".

The corrected text would read as follows:

    "
    Aubrey: The Flames would send
    you, Mermentia. Travel to
Ishgard and take part in the
    attempt to reclaim Dzemael
    Darkhold. The commanding
    officer of House Fortemps's army
is Ser Artoirel. You will first
need to present yourself to him
    for duty.
    "

    Steps to Reproduce:
    1) Start the game...
    2) Complete the rank 25 quest "Imperial Devices".
    3) With a rank 45 character (...), enter the Hall of Flames in Ul'dah and speak to Aubrey about the "Into the Dark" quest.
    4) Observe the text that appears.

For further (likely unnecessary) backup on this issue, the following text is seen in the first journal entry for this quest:

    "
speak to the commander of House Fortemps's knight, Ser Artoirel.
    "

Odd - that's not how I was taught.

I was taught that when placing a possessive apostrophe onto a word ending with s, the additional s is not required so as to preserve pronunciation.

As an (albeit mundane and religious but well known) example, one would not say "Jesuses" (Jesus's) works, but Jesus' works. Unless of course you're in a culture that "does it wrong but says we do it wrong instead" (pass the tom-ay-toes please).

    I'm rambling now...

I was taught that way as well, Iceboud, but I was taught that back in 1st grade and I've come to learn pretty much everything that wasn't in a textbook that was told to me in elementary school was anecdotal nonsense passed around the teacher watercooler.

You don't eat spiders in your sleep, your hair and fingernails don't grow after you're dead, lemmings don't commit suicide... and you can't cheap yourself out of the second S on a possessive.

That very link you quoted says you can, as long as you are consistent with it. Check out Merm's other post:

    Adders' nest.

(I was talking about my year 12 English Teacher by the way.)

It does, but for I still tend to stick with the main rule and not the "it's forgivable to as long as..." exceptions. It goes either way, but I believe most of the game is pretty consistent with the s' consistency, as you say.

You'll find that the game is indeed consistent with these possessives, and the way I've written this up is how the game has been stylized. "Adders' Nest" is a different issue. In that case, there are several different entities (Adders) that own one object. In that case, you would correctly place one apostrophe after "Adders" and arrive at what you see in the game: "Adders' Nest".

In this case, there is one House Fortemps. Any singular entity that is in possession of something has "'s" added to the end of it. Therefore, it should be "House Fortemps's army."

Apostrophe added for a future patch. Thanks, Merm!
