New Jobs in 4.0, perhaps this pic has some hints

No Assassin job. Ninja/Thief has always been the FF 'Assassin' job with abilities like Sneak Attack, Trick Attack, Assassinate, Hide, and in FFXI THF got a trait that was literally called "Assassin", as well as AF2 armor that was called "Assissin's Attire" (and an AF3 called "Raider's Attire" which resembled Assassin's Creed with a white hood!)

doesnt help that NIN has all the THF skills now , even the chained skills are named on FFXI THF weaponskills ....so i dont expect to see thief ever ...sad because thief has nothing to do with ninja....but thats FFXIV for ya.

If you're referring to FFXIV, then this is true. However, in "Final Fantasy", Ninja is upgraded from the Thief job.

Well, that's not true. In FF there is another job system and to be ninja is required to be thief but that doesnt men you cant be thief. Here, thief is class you cant play in endgame and, even this class, is pretty different from the ninja job. Thats why i still hope to see Thief as a job in this game and we should let SE know that there are plenty of players that want Thief as full job.

In FF I (which is what FF system was looking like) to become ninja, you were picking thief at the beggining. Then you had to obtain Rat's Tail, and good guy bahamut was upgrading your party into advanced classes. THF > NIN.
The only aspect i can think of, which is as you say, is actually FF tactics, and FF V.
