Exactly. I'm happy to see that we have moved on from mindless timesink pointless quests that conservative "hardcore" players deem a "challenge."Let's say I'm a new FFXIV player, I want my personal chocobo, what are the steps?
1. Level to 25
2. Join a Grand Company by doing a quest
3. Rise to the rank of member (that's probably going to be at least one quest as well)
4. Accumulate seals by doing a lot of Caravan escorts or by doing the rank 25 raid (that takes hours if you don't know anyone)
(5. Do a quest that's about Chocobos, we don't know anything yet and people are already calling for a riot.)
6. Buy your chocobo license
In FFXI we have:
1. Trade one item to a Chocobo every hour for 5 hours.
2. ???
3. Congrats, you can now ride Chocobos!
You can be proud of yourself, you really worked hard for that license there.
I can't believe some of the people here, OF COURSE it's going to be easy to get a Chocobo when you have multiple rank 50 classes? Did you think you'd have to save a Chocobo from a level 90 Wyrm in a full party? Jesus christ...

I regret making this thread. I am going to assume each company WILL have a chocobo based quest, and they just didn't mention it. Why should they mention everything like that? I am sorry

don't blame yourself, you probably got caught up in the "make it hardcore so no one else can be as good as me" fad that seems to have swept through community general in the last couple of days
FFXIV FORUMS = CRYINGCRAFT

Honestly it'll probably be challenging for those not already 45+. And even then, we still dont know how many seals it takes to be promoted from Recruit rank. If anything we'll probably get a cutscene about chocobos after handing in the insurance form, and prior to we'll probably be funneled into a beast tribe stronghold or other quests to get enough seals to rank up and then more to get the insurance itself.

People on here keep grouping me with the hardcore crowd. I have never beaten r45 dungeon, and I die constantly which is a running joke in my LS. I simply like story.

Perhaps I've been less than clear. Please, don't get me wrong. I'm all for the new development team, and I very much like Yoshida. I'm complaining about the loud chorus of entitled whiners that want everything rushed to them, regardless of quality. I just happen to think that making things available easily should not precede depth, layering and complexity... and yes, a certain degree of difficulty to access them. They've already stated mulitple times that the airships and chocobos would be constantly fleshed out as time goes by. Its not like we're going to just get this and be stuck with it, any more than us being stuck with the current classes or current class skill sets.
Eventually we'll be having airship specific content, pvp in gladiator arenas, our chocobos aiding in battle, and even jumping. The problem is, since we're playing the game right now, AND a new team is working on the game simultaneously, we're seeing things implemented and improved as they go. Also Yoshi-P and team arent implementing things at a rate that the player base is dictating. If that was the case, they would've just thrown up a job system and let us have at it.
Honestly, I dont see the big deal in getting a company issued chocobo after doing quests and paying for it...especially when we'll be breeding them sooner or later, fighting along side them, and other things you probably wouldnt ever be able to do in Vana'diel or any other FF universe in the past.
I'm sure a certain balance will eventually arrive, but in the meantime, the psychological space of the game will be marred by a feeling of shallow, makeshift, simplicity that does not become the feeling of heroic adventure. I wanted a world to conquer, not one to be given to me for free. And by the time It becomes balanced, complex and challenging, I'll have 10 classes capped, and the trip there will have left only shallow memories of routine fights and lackluster equipment. (And don't tell me that we have to leve, and quest, and rank up, level up, and grind some more, as proof that this game has challenge. What did you expect? This is an MMO, for crying out loud! Those are the bare minimum. I want real imagination-stealing storylines and puzzles to solve, and battles that will test my ingenuity and skill.)
I still think the world is too small for chocobos and airships and I will continue stating it. If they were going to be introduced at this point, perhaps a higher set of hurdles was becoming. But the tantrum-prone needed appeasing, and what I'm seeing is a system that needed to be introduced in stages being rushed from both ends. We're simultaneously getting rentals and owned chocobos. And the latter will almost be given to you for free, if you are over 45. Why! I just got a surprise allowance of 1K seals from the Flames, at Ul'dah; that is exactly one third of what it will cost me to own my very own chocobo. Never mind that I already owned 6k and had nothing really pressing to spend them in. :-/

The world isn't too small per se; the problem is, there's not much IN IT to go do.
I still think the world is too small for chocobos and airships and I will continue stating it.
For example, think about Thanalan. There's actually a large area to run around in, and a lot of it is very difficult to reach thanks to high-level mobs. But there's no real reason to get to the difficult places, because there simply isn't anything behind them that profits your char. in any way.
One thing that could really help that - and that is on the planned list for 1.19 - are treasure chest on the field map, not connected to leves or quests. That would really add a badassness to getting around the strong mobs - knowing that you have a greater chance of finding some nice treasure hidden away.

I don't see the point in flipping out over this. Honestly how hard did you truly expect this to be? This has to be accessible to everyone within an a decent amount of time. 3k marks may not seem like much, but look at it this way. With the exception of this event that gives 1k marks for free we currently cannot get marks TILL like what R25ish with the first dungeon? So a new player, it actually would take time for them to aquire what they need to get their birds. You can't expect a MID-LEVEL feature to be a challenge when nearly everyone in this game has already established themselves. The cost is in line with what I would expect for our entree level personal mounts.
Remember down the line there will be chocobo breeding, more colors, barding and gear to pimp them out with.
In short realize its a Mid-Level item. Its like walking into the R25 dungeon with 4 R50's and then coming out going... "Well that was to easy.."
