Dont forget progressing towards the strongholds, and whatever out of the way places Company Quest/new story missions send us too. Also normal quests and NMs.The world isn't too small per se; the problem is, there's not much IN IT to go do.
For example, think about Thanalan. There's actually a large area to run around in, and a lot of it is very difficult to reach thanks to high-level mobs. But there's no real reason to get to the difficult places, because there simply isn't anything behind them that profits your char. in any way.
One thing that could really help that - and that is on the planned list for 1.19 - are treasure chest on the field map, not connected to leves or quests. That would really add a badassness to getting around the strong mobs - knowing that you have a greater chance of finding some nice treasure hidden away.
As far as touching on region largeness in general, Coerthas just feels huge.

Walk from Grid to Ul'dah. Then go down into the pit near Horizon and kill all the high level monsters down there 100 times, each.
Then go and buy your bird.
Congratulations, you got your grind-fest for your chocobo without making anyone else suffer. Do you feel special now?

lol... that was funny, i have to admit. But seriously, why are some of you guys so opposed to working to gain you goodies? I mean, isn't that in essence what an rpg is all about? Why do you look at it as a form of punishment instead of joy? Surely it can be entertaining. Then again, i pose another question. By the same token, isn't it even more punishing to grind through levequests 100's of times to get to rank 50, same concept applies to crafting which is even more tedious.Walk from Grid to Ul'dah. Why is it when it comes to something like a new fun feature such as chocobo and Airship and lemme say a one-off quest which is also tied into the lore, it is such a big deal for some here? This goes beyond me. Please provide a valid explanation, because it doesn't make any sense to me. This is an rpg and this is how these games work, you work for your stuff. Never handed easy from the start. Almost sounds to me you're more of like a Shooter/Action type gamer than an rpg fan? Just sayin'
because you are r40... and this was made for rank 20-25... therefore it is easy hand to you because you are over the "quest limit" for chocobo's Try over at r1 and work up like first experience the game get to 25 and I be it is no longer an easy hand me, but you actually had to work for it....lol... that was funny, i have to admit. Because we have been working for our goodies for a year. Chocobos should have been in at launch or within a couple of patches, by now we would have all had our birds 100x over. We've stuck the game out through a horrible crap launch, through a dev recycle, through slow patches and much more.lol... that was funny, i have to admit. I earned my seals and if I can come in and get a bird not long after I get into game after patch, then so be it, I am happy.
Had we been starting out fresh we would be waiting around 20+ ranks before we could unlock the birds, based on current rank requirements for seal quests. Does it seem easy? Yeah it does, but thats because we have been gobbling every piece of content thrown at us like ravenous wolves for months.
New players are not going to just log in and have a chocobo, its not going to happen. They are going to need to rank and quest and earn seals. This content is not designed to challenge everyone that is already 50, you can't just make getting a chocobo really hard because most of your player base is 50, it has to be designed from the get go so that's its accessible to those around mid rank when your suppose to earn it. It would be be a bit of a time sink/challenge AT the proper rank mid level rank, problem is we never had it in time. SE is not playing to just the small amount of us toughing it out, we are not going to toss them that much cash in the end, they need their PS3 players to earn the case and as such content needs to be tiered properly
Besides, who's to say that we will not be able to unlock better chocobos and mounts down the line? Chocobos are not the only mount we will have access to, I am sure there will be some insanely hard mounts down the line, then you can grind away.
Emerald is right, if you desperately need to feel some achievement hook up with a group of like minded people and make up your own quest and swear not to acquire your birds until you feel you 'earned' it. Then you can ride your chocobo in pride and look down at all us other players who took the 'easy way out' by playing the game and earning the birds by the planned methods. You could also roll and alt and decide not get a chocobo until your alt has acquired it, that way you can take it slow, if you so choose.

How 'bout this for and explanation of why we don't want a pointless time waster quest like XI's or some long drawn out quest that would be a challenge for hardcores and r50'slol... that was funny, i have to admit. THIS IS MID-LEVEL CONTENT! IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE A CHALLENGE FOR r50'S!
christ, you have to level to r22 to get access to Grand Companies, then do the various quest to get your 3k seals, rank 25 is when you're finally allowed to even do the first quest that nets a decent amount of 'em, then as is alluded to in the text of these quests, ranks are bought not awarded so there's some of those 3k seals gone, now do caravan quests to shore up that lost amount, and knowing SE they will be a huge pain for level appropriate. come back and finally buy your issuance and if any of you had bothered to read the article you would see you then take that item to the rental chocobo people and trade it to them for your company issued chocobo, and most likely when you trade your issuance thingie to them you are most likely going to get your cutscene,...sounds like plenty of work for the chocobo to me!

Right, i get your point about having put in effort to get to the 3k seals stage. Though i'm arguing a one-off somewhat deep and meaningful Chocobo related quest to give it more meaning and just get a feel of it, doesn't have to be punishment. Surely that can't be bad?because you are r40... and this was made for rank 20-25... therefore it is easy hand to you because you are over the "quest limit" for chocobo's Try over at r1 and work up like first experience the game get to 25 and I be it is no longer an easy hand me, but you actually had to work for it....
A cs or a quest along with the 3000 wont be horrible but it shouldn't be what some other's are asking for... just we have to wait to see what they hid away in the patch because I know what they told us can't possibly be all of it... so I am just excited to see the notes (probably monday or tuesday)
