Really? I though this game was a big lawl game with all the inside jokes, memes, and parodies it has.

Well, it also feels like it is getting progressively worse... it used to be that a few quests or fates were references... now it seems that most of them are... or at least it is very frequent.

I don't really like it... I find it cheesy, lazy, and juvenile. But, hey maybe it is popular with a target demographic that isn't me. I would expect that more from DQ Online... I always liked FFs for the more mature story and content.

Most (all?) of the FATEs, even in the early zones, have pun or joke names and are usually grouped thematically. If I recall correctly, La Noscea is all 80s pop songs. It's not really something that's come along just recently.

Usually if it's not in-your-face or clearly forced, I usually don't have much of an issue with something like that.

WoW did it too. Initially it was very subtle and didn't impact the overall sense of immersion. Eventually, however, WoW ended up having entire quest chains in major zones devoted to awkward references in place of solid lore. I just hope FFXIV never reaches that same point. To be safe, I'd like to see them tone it down for a while. I'd rather see more references to other FF titles and games such as Vagrant Story.

A lot of moments in mop expansion broke it for me. There's so many meme references that aren't subtle at best, and incredibly forced at worse.
