Then join the guild that does the thing you're more interested in??What are the disadvantages? Surely you must have several reasons why alliances are a bad reason since you seem to be set against them?
What are alliances? Let's face facts here and say that you cannot please everyone, sometimes parts of your fc are hardcore raiders, some times they are casual bunnies. What if you joined together in a trio of alliances, one is a casual fc, one is raiders and the third is a pvp only aspect. By joining these 3 together the members can take advantage of several areas of the game without having to play with random folks or bug their own fc who may not be interested in pvp perhaps. They can at least ask in the alliance chat and group with a different fc, make friends, learn new aspects of the game, etc.
The only real disadvantage is the possibility of less people using the party finder to find groups when they can just ask their alliance chat; however with that said, the alliance would really be no different than a linkshell.
The idea of alliances is no different then having a max size FC. Sure we could share houses, but what would be the point if my FC already has a house? Everyone in the alliance would probably pick one plot to be the central hub and the other plots would slowly get used less and less as more people gather at main house. Everyone else who really wants isolation would probably just teleport to their own personal house; which as more FCs join forces, more would take on the mentality of wanting to dominate an entire ward to their alliance. There's already a problem with players and FCs owning multiple houses, alliances would only worsen that and encourage multi housing even further. Aside from the social aspect which can easily be fixed by either joining a larger FC or linkshell, I don't see how alliances in FFXIV would have any benefit at all. In my honest opinion, it's a complete waste of resources. The concept is a nice one, however I feel alliances has no place to serve in this game considering the PVP side of things has a lot of other flaws that should be worked out first; such as faster que times. Alliances would only worsen the que times. It already takes an hour just for a premade to que. Lastly, if you ever felt like just a number by joining an FC with 300+ members in it, you'll definitely just be a number in any alliance.
Edit: I could see alliances being useful for lesser FCs banding together, but again, if your FC is that small a linkshell can easily fix this problem or perhaps they should consider merging together instead.
The only group of people I could see making full advantage of alliances is Role Playing FCs; as they could easily port from home to home and maintain their stories with better control in larger settings.

Several things you said are misguided and a one sided opinion and even contradict solid fact. Free Company alliances have many benefits for every type of player. Heck I've been to quite a few servers and seen the status of there party finders. FC alliances would open up a lot of opportunities for content progression since most content is only cleared through free companies on less populated servers. On more populated servers FC alliances could simply benefit 3 fcs sharing the same house. Since your from balmung i hope you can understand that housing is becoming an issue. Then join the guild that does the thing you're more interested in??

Even when they open up new plots it will still be an issue because of the population on that server.Housing is still in an
early phase of development and new features are being added constantly. Your perspective is assuming that 3 fcs are
gonna start from scratch and become an alliance. I have friends in another fc that refuse to leave theirs and i
refuse to leave mine. Both are top tier guilds and very active. Both leaders would love to merge but the current cap on
members wont allow that. Also the gil spent on house, raiding groups, airship level, etc.. This is where alliances
would shine. Bringing players together the way linkshells can't, since linkshell player cap is only 100+/-.

I agree with Xander. This could be very important. I understand the problem of wasted resources. But if this is the case, or if Alliance Leaders have a problem they can drop the alliance and form an alliance with another FC. Maybe some houses would be central hubs. Maybe some alliances would not have central hubs. I would like to create an alliance with a few FCs on our server. One is predominately a crafting FC and one is a raiding FC. I imagine an FC alliance is to help each other, so players benefit.

I saw this post on another thread. This would be really nice. I hope that we can alliance up with a handful of FCs versus only 3-4.Basically, 5-10 FCs that can ally and converse in an overarching Alliance channel. FC leaders would just need an invite/leave/join menu. Not thinking much is needed. This would allow friends of various FCs (but also new ones) to communicate and organize ventures that are otherwise a little hard to queue for sometimes (certain 8 and 24 player queues, pvp) as well as other events.
I really want this!
More things for the wish list:
*FC Alliance Tab - Listed FC Alliance FCs.
With this possible shared buffs ?
*FC Alliance Naming? Would be a cool feature.

Well, I would love some special alliance-only content released with the alliance system rather than just QoL stuff like shared housing and buffs..

I think this is an interesting concept. Any ideas? I do like the idea of sharing buffs. But FCs want to be both individual and also in an alliance. So it doesn't make sense to drop FC buffs just for Alliance buffs? Maybe there could be stages to the FC alliance like there is with FCs. Ranks 1-8. And then you could unlock 1-2 buffs (granted if you had that FC buff up it would not overlap). Would be a nice feature?
