I think they need to create a generic set of crafted gear that is meldable and wearable by all classes. The stats need to be good enough that it is not considered junk. This set needs to be crafted by the various classes, but should not require being a specialist.

Then they need to make sets that are only wearable by a specialist. These sets should have better stats and require less melds to equal or surpass the generic set/sets. These should require specialists to craft the gear and some should require culinarian specialists to make ingredients for.

This would make both types of crafters busy making and selling these and equipping themselves. With the recent screenies of TV craft material from il170 gear (in items sub-forum) even needing tv melds shold not be a problem soon enough.

The problem is that at the moment micro-monopolies are worse than omnicrafters. Which is what SE has created. The micro-monopolies result in crazy prices which stay over a longer term. They can get rid of omni-crafters but they NEED to make specialist top crafting more accessible if they are doing this. Otherwise the net change is more unhealthy than where we were previously at.

And as Rath pointed out there needs to be a taper into this. Something easily accessible into the majority of the recipes (and able to HQ) while the highly specialized equipment requires dedication.

The way specialists should've worked was by giving specialists stat advantages for their given specalist classes, allowing them to craft the latest starred items without the latest gear or melding. This would allow specialists to have an early lead on the newest recipes while allowing all crafters to eventually unlock the crafts via gearing and melding.

The souls should also unlock cross-class skills for crafting classes you might not have learned yet, so you can actually specialize in one craft. This would fix what specialists were meant to fix.

I've said many a time and I will say it again. Remove specialist as a requirement for these recipes, and instead give specialists their own version OF the recipe, with (~15%?) lower progress/quality requirements, and/or with better material efficiency (cheaper recipes). Specialists get the advantage within their chosen craft, while not excluding others. Specialists can more easily produce more of their goods, and others may choose to buy from them for the sake of time and efficiency. At the same time, it does not exclude those who do not wish to buy form making their own, simply requiring more time/effort and maybe better gear to produce the same quality.

As for the other original purpose of specialists, rework their skill system. Start them at 30 and give a better set of skills that actually reduces the need for cross class reliance. Limit cross-class as a job would (1 per 10 max 5) to keep these powerful specialist skills from being too overpowered in combination.

crafting has been made even more restrictive and not accessible because of Specialist. and the addition of a weekly cap (red scripts). not to mention how utterly useless/ not really needed those specialist skills.

i feel the only reason they made the relic items the way they are now is because they want to force people to use specialists. since majority of crafters pretty much ignored specialist and used their old skills.

SE making a mistake, fixes it by introducing another mistake.... crafting and gathering has not recovered since 3.0 released...

they should release crafting V materia already.

someone needs to tell the devs... specialist and red scripts did not make crafting easier.... or for those people who wants to get into crafting. it did the complete opposite of that.

    warning bad English here.
-extremely disappointed at this system,i feel they are forcing me to depend on other ppl to craft some items,i feel the crafting freedom has been taken away from all my crafters... allowing me only to have 3 specialists at the same time is very annoying, they should allow us to get extra stones so we can get more specialist an be able to craft the items lock behind it...not forcing me to depend on others to obtain items or pay high prices on the MB, there is a reason why most of us get all crafters to 60 an is bcuz we like to craft everything our self an not asking/pay someone else to do it.
i dont care if the soul stone cost x5 the actual scrip price but give us the freedom we deserve,we should be allow to have all 8 specialist if we can work for it!.
-don't hand it to us...make us work for it..
    or remove the specialist lock...

I'm very sad to see this trend. I come from other MMOs where you needed a stable of alts if you wanted to cover all the crafts. So just the idea of a true omni-crafter being possible in this game has been a pleasant surprise. Now SE seems to be going the route of those other MMOs. And this is without benefits we had there like shared banks and the ability to mail our alts, meaning at the very least we didn't have to all be omni-gatherers as well. The irony with SE's actions for me is that those other games when I left were starting to move toward a more omni-crafter setup, since players were dissatisfied with having to maintain all of those alts.

I completely agree that this system is not good, as was the case with desynthesis. Perhaps the main draw for me of this game is the ability to do EVERYTHING on one character if I put in the time and effort and the repeated moves away from that is making the game less appealing to me and a lot less fun.
