The botanist tool is a two handed Scythe used as it is supposed to be, with the two perpendicular handles. Using it like that gives more leverage and allows you to pull it in towards ones self, which is handy, considering the blade is pointed in towards the user.
Interestingly, a one hand sickle has had more success as a weapon than a scythe historically. Not quite relevant, since you're talking about it as a fantasy weapon commonly associated with the grim reaper ((Who classically uses it in it's traditional sense, as a tool for reaping. But again neither here not there.))
