It wasn't even particularly useful in the game it did appear in (FF tactics). It was just a nuisance way to permanently increase your bravery or faith. The only other worthwhile role it had was to convince an enemy unit to join you. Other than that it was worthless and other jobs had better ways to defeat their enemies.

Heh, I completly agree with you that Mediator is very unlikely class, since it's not greatly popular or well known. As you mentioned in FFT it had it's niche uses but when it came to actually killing monsters it was profoundly lacking when compared to the other classes. And that's what made it stand out for me, the fact that it wasn't meant to be a battle class focused on fighting, but in dialogue.

Now about me personally. I loved Mediator in Tactics profoundly, my favorite class by far. Not based on it's uses, but on the concept in general, since if were to choose between the options of talking to an enemy or to stick a sword in his head, I would without doubts choose the diplomatic option. It's a exotic concept for RPGs in general to have a battle class focused not on 'fighting', but one I appreciate much.

Now it's also worth mentioning, that while Mediator was a FF Tactics job, it also appeared in FFV in the form of Beastmaster, so Beastmaster and Mediator while having vastly different concepts, also have some similarities, and I also believe that bringing different concepts and classes that aren't popular, well-known, and staple is a nice addition to the dialogue, since it might futher expand the possibilities that can be brought up as matters of discussion.
