Yeah, it's unfortunate how slow it is. I got Amal'jaa up to Rank 2 in 2.x before deciding the rewards weren't worth it. It's fun to go back as lvl 60 and roflstomp through those lvl 48 enemies.

Once you get to Rank 3 with a 2.x beast tribe, do you get a token with every quest completion, like the Vanu Vanu? If so, with 6 completions per day, it's going to be so much faster getting Relic items through the Amal'jaa than the Vanu Vanu.

Can you do 9 quests per day with one Eorzean beast tribe? Or does it have to be spread 6 for one, 3 for another? Hopefully I don't have to level up another tribe to make use of all 9

You get 12 beast tribe quest allowances per day in total. The 2.X beast tribes have a distinct NPC for each new rank you achieve (up to 3 for the first four beast tribes) which will each generate 3 new quests on the daily reset. If you accept all of the quests from all of those NPCs, you can use 9 allowances on one tribe.

That being said, only the third tier (level 48) quests will give you the tokens used for relic progression. If you have the third tier unlocked for a particular tribe, it's a more efficient use of your allowances to just do the level 48 quests and use your other allowances to build rank with the other tribes. At max rank, you get just enough allowances per day to do the three level 48 quests for sylphs, Amalj'aa, kobolds, and sahagin, which are collectively the most efficient way to get the relic items assuming that you need to build up your stock of them evenly. If you are getting them from other sources (for instance, if you get more law than poetics from the other content you do or vice versa) then it can be useful to grab Vanu tokens instead. The items cost more Vanu tokens than the others (18 Vanu whitebones vs 13 of any of the other tokens), but you can get any of the unidentifiable items this way.

My personal strategy at this point has been to grab all of the 2.X quests but replace any specific ones I don't want to do (e.g. the FATE-based ones when it's not up) with Vanu quests.
