    Besides the place where you want the truly buff gear is in NM/HNM/Dungeon parties, it's not absolutely necessary for your standard grind parties. Not to mention that it gives rank 50's a reason to come party with the rank 43-49s.

    The biggest thing this does is give crafters a market for gear on a continuous basis. Since the existing gear goes bye bye when you convert it into materia, this means that people will want to either buy specific pieces to spirit bond with or replace the items they've converted to materia on a regular basis. Boom instant market. Thank god there's a simplified crafting system coming in or all the crafters would be screaming for inventory space... F. that, I'll still be screaming for inventory or vendor space. I'll take either, both would be preferable.
    I think they mean their +3s and rare ex gears. the hq, because they dont want to destroy it, and the rare ex because it wont actually be able to make materia.

    there isnt much reason for a high level guy to grind old gear in this system, since the high level gear is good. Well since it is tiered, they may go to the lowest weapon in that tier, but really they will probably go to the cheapest in whatever tier.

    Right, when I said sub-par, I didn't mean you have to gimp yourself...just use older gear from the last 10 levels or so. Or for me, I can switch out my [item=5030108]Astaroth Cane[/item] for my old [item=5030205]Jade Crook[/item].

    I just wanted to note the difference between current high-leveled characters and new players, or people starting out in a new class. Whereas we'll be going back and making a concerted effort to go and grind for Materia (potentially having to buy even more gear in the process if we happened to sell our old Jade Crooks, for example... /tear), new players won't really need to experience this grind, since they can continuously turn each of their weapons into Materia to attach to their next weapon.

    Your second part brings up a good point though. Of course, it depends on which weapons will yield certain Materia, but once the system is figured out I'm sure most people will in fact start buying the cheapest weapons they can to achieve the same results. Why turn a Jade Crook into Materia IV, for example, when a cheaper weapon will yield the same results? It'll be interesting to see if they accounted for that.

    Looking forward to translations.

    One post seems to be about the japanese name of attachment, but the other seems to have some details on the Materia system (Google translate seems to 100% confirm that materia can't be attached to Rare/Ex gear but it might be doable in further updates, that players will be able to attach the first materia themselves with kits, etc ...).

    ・EX/RAREへのマテリア装着は当面不可(コンテンツアップデート次第)
    ・計算式改修が同時に入りますのでパラメータ+1の重みが出るようになります(松井頑張ってます!)
    Attaching materia to Ex/Rare will not be possible for now (depends on content update)
    Calculation changes are coming in at same time so will make sure the +1 parameter will weigh more (more effect) (Matsui is working hard on this one!)

    また、仕様をすべて書きだして行くと、確かに複雑には見えますが、
    ひとつのアイテムに、ひとつのマテリアをはめる行為そのものは、
    部位によって装着可能なマテリア効果条件はありますが、
    装着自体は、失敗も無く、強化されるのみですので、さほど複雑ではないと思っています。
    あくまでスタートラインの仕組みです。
    When writing down all the details for the materia craft it seems like a difficult system but attaching one materia to one item itself, although it has restriction on which part you can attach the materia but performing attachment itself doesn't have any failure (since its the first one) and it only makes the equipment better, so I don't think it's difficult.
    Just talking basically about the start line.
